Known for its commitment to patient care and community service, Baptist Health operates 200+ locations and six hospitals, including Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center, Baptist Heart Hospital, Baptist Neurological Institute, and Wolfson Children's Hospital. The Bioethics Program at Baptist Health System is seeking a Senior Clinical Ethicist to join their team.

Responsibilities

• Receive and conduct ethics consultations independently
• Document consultations in the electronic health record
• Follow up with patient cases after referral
• Engage directly with care providers, professional staff, patients, and families
• Work closely with other members of the Ethics Program to deliver high quality ethics consultation services
• Participate in on-call services on a rotating basis
• Contribute to the continuous development and quality improvement of ethics consultation services
• Track ethics consultations, identify recurring issues, and work on process improvement initiatives
• Engage in preventative ethics activities such as participating in Bioethics Performance Improvement Case Conferences, rounding on units, and providing moral distress debriefs
• Deliver high-quality bioethics education throughout the health system
• Develop and deliver bioethics education to medical residents, PA, ARNP, medical, and nursing students, and multidisciplinary healthcare Team members
• Engage in clinical ethics research and scholarship
• Develop, review, and revise ethics-related policies
• Lend expertise and insight on clinical and organizational ethical issues in Health System committees and working groups

Qualifications

• Master's degree in ethics, bioethics, philosophy, public health, nursing, or other healthcare degree (terminal degree in ethics, bioethics, philosophy, law, public health, nursing, or other healthcare field strongly preferred)
• Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in an acute care hospital in a similar role
• Fellowship strongly preferred (HEC-C will be considered in lieu of fellowship for candidates with extensive relevant clinical experience)
• Extensive experience performing ethics consultations in pediatric and adult settings, either as an individual ethics consultant or as part of an ethics consultation team, strongly preferred
• Preference will be given to individuals with experience in providing education to healthcare professionals in a clinical setting, clinical policy development, conflict-negotiation skills, excellent written and verbal skills, demonstrated ability to conduct research and publish in scholarly journals on issues in clinical and organizational ethics, performing clinical ethics consultations that demonstrate an understanding and appreciation for ethics case consultation methodologies, documenting ethics consultations in the electronic medical record, identifying and incorporating metrics by which to assess clinical ethics consultations and continuously improving the quality of these consultations, presenting on diverse issues in clinical ethics to multidisciplinary audiences
