Organic Squash-Bug Control

Squash bugs are the most serious pest of squash and pumpkins in the garden. They also feed on cucumbers and melons, but are not usually a serious problem. The adults and nymphs damage plants by sucking plant juices from the stems, buds, and fruits, then inject a toxin that causes leaves to wilt, blacken, and die.

The adults overwinter in garden debris, re-emerge when the weather warms, and mate soon after squash plants are set out. Squash bug adults are approximately 5/8-inch long, dark brown or grey, and hard-shelled, emitting a disagreeable odor when crushed. The nymphs are light green and resemble small spiders running up plant stems. Eggs are brown to brick red, shiny, and hard, often laid in neatly ordered rows on the undersides of leaves or stems.

Early signs of infestation include small yellow specks on leaves that turn brown, followed by leaves drying out and becoming brittle. Immediate action is required to control this pest.

• Egg Removal: Scout plants for shiny, brown eggs and crush or rub them off to break the life cycle.
• Nymph Control: Look for light green nymphs near eggs and squish them.
• Adult Hand-Picking: Capture adults in cool hours by dropping them into soapy water.
• Sanitation: Remove old squash plants after harvest and clear garden debris to eliminate overwintering sites. Till the area to bury adults and destroy habitats.
• Crop Rotation: Plant squash and pumpkins in a different garden location each year.

Natural predators like praying mantids can help by eating eggs and nymphs. If chemical control is necessary, pyrethrums sprayed on nymphs and adults (focusing on leaf undersides) can be effective as a last resort. Neem oil works on the smallest nymphs but requires repeated applications due to continuous hatching. Maintain a clean, healthy garden to ensure a successful squash and pumpkin harvest.
