About the role

The Pest Manager is responsible for administering and overseeing an effective, long-term and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management. The role is critical to the IPM program, involving facility inspections, trapping, documentation, and interactions with the National Park Service’s Wildlife office and IPM coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Develops action thresholds for specific aspects of the IPM program and communicates thresholds to key stakeholders.
  • Administers corrective counseling as needed.
  • This position reports to the Environmental Manager.
  • May be required to use different personal protective equipment such as respirator, bee suit, Tyvek suit, gloves, etc.
  • Willing to work in outdoor conditions including around dirt, dust, must, in extreme heat, snow, rain and other weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working around and near wildlife, including bears, rodents, spider, ants, squirrels, marmots, deer, and more.
  • A background check is required for this position.
  • Have a current and valid US Driver’s License with ability to pass a MVR to be able to operate company vehicles.
  • Able to pass a respirator fit test and use a respirator.
  • Key responsibilities are divided into 4 major function areas as outlined below:
    • Measure Pest Activity (10% of time spent): Measures pest activity through both site inspections and review of documentation associated with trapping to determine effectiveness of exclusion and abatement efforts, then provides recommendations to key stakeholders to address deficiencies. Communicate/ report to NPS and CDPH weekly and attend parks quarterly IPM meeting & YBC Monthly Meeting.
    • Facility Inspections and NPS Liaison (70% of time spent): Conducts facility inspections for purposes of identifying structural deficiencies which could harbor pests or impede exclusion of pests from facilities. Develops best practices for facility occupants to support pest abatement efforts, Work w/ NPS Wildlife on wildlife issues, trash issues at the units and trapping protocol. Track and report pesticide usage to NPS and all pesticide use proposals. Attend NPS wildlife trainings. Work with the pest contractor.
    • Documentation (10% of time spent): Develops and maintains documentation for IPM initiatives including disseminating information to key stakeholders and preparing information for internal and external review.
    • Program Development (10% of time spent): Develops rodent trapping programs for all work and housing areas and provides training, guidance and oversight of unit trapping programs including proper utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE). Works with facility services, pest management vendors, subcontractors, and/or other resources to coordinate necessary repairs to facilities to meet exclusion requirements.

Requirements

  • Degree in biology, environmental sciences, wildlife behavior, or other applicable areas preferred.
  • 2 years’ experience with Integrated Pest Management or similar pest control duties.
  • Proficient in computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint or similar programs.
  • Must have a general knowledge of IPM methods to control pests.
  • Must be willing and able to become IPM certified through the National Park Service
  • Strong organizational skills are desirable
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required
