About the role

The YMCA of Greater Boston is searching for a Sports Instructor to lead sports classes for children and adults of all ages. Classes are held on weekday afternoons and weekend mornings.

Responsibilities

  • Coach sports programs using provided curriculum and self-designed curriculum, emphasizing skill development, sportsmanship, and the YMCA's core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
  • Demonstrate designed skills and outcomes to foster learning and skill development.
  • Maintain group focus and attention, using a strong coaching presence to positively redirect participants as needed.
  • Assess players' age and skill levels, challenging them with achievable skills, drills, and games.
  • Maintain a safe playing environment by reducing risks, ensuring guidelines are followed, and promoting age-appropriate play.
  • Prepare for each class session by reviewing and practicing skills, drills, and activities; set up and clean up the play field.
  • Provide real-time feedback to players to help them improve their skills, using positive encouragement and motivational statements.
  • Serve as a role model, setting the tone for expected behavior.
  • Communicate with parents, sharing successes, challenges, and information in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Keep accurate attendance records.
  • Ensure policies and procedures for attendance, participation, and safety are followed at all times.
  • Attend meetings, required trainings, events, and additional YMCA functions as needed.
  • Engage with families, children, and other Y employees to be seen as a leader within the YMCA.

Requirements

  • One to two years of related experience preferred (e.g., as a sports coach or volunteer).
  • CPR, First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen certifications (provided upon hire).
  • Child Abuse Prevention Training (provided upon hire).

Skills & Competencies

  • Excellent relationship-building and conflict-resolution skills to facilitate positive relationships with parents, staff, children, and community partners.
  • Strong coaching skills, including clear instruction, feedback, and positive motivation.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Ability to manage small and large groups of children and/or adults.

Qualities Needed

Energetic, motivated, and well-organized individual with a passion for children and sports.

Pay

$16.00 - $20.00 per hour.

Schedule

Weekday afternoons and weekend mornings.
