About the role
The assistant coach for triathlon will assist the Head Coach in directing practices three times a week for the academic year. Duties include creating practice schedules, working with team leaders to schedule practices, providing guidance on the sport, and ensuring all operations are conducted with safety as the top priority.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the creation of practice schedules to accommodate novice, intermediate, and advanced athletes.
- Work with team leaders to schedule and facilitate practices; ensure workouts are executed properly and modified for athletes when necessary.
- Provide guidance to athletes about the intricacies of the sport of triathlon including but not limited to gear purchases, race strategy, and training.
- Work with team officers, coaches, administrators, and alumni to ensure program success.
- Be a positive role model for club members.
- Represent the team and Associated Students/SDSU in a professional manner at all times.
- Aid in the design and implementation of practice schedules and training schemes for practices.
- Ensure scheduled practices begin and end on time.
- Work with coaches from other programs and the WCCTC.
- Assist with the necessary equipment needed for new and returning members.
- Collaborate with team officers and administrators to develop and achieve program priorities.
- Maintain team's positive community standing.
- Recruit support for the team from alumni.
- Represent the team in regional or national meetings with other coaches or organizations.
Qualifications
- Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Experience: Proficient knowledge of Aztec Recreation programs, facilities, and policies required; knowledge of Microsoft applications and Aztec Recreation website required; knowledge and/or participation of Aztec Recreation programs and facilities preferred.
- Licenses & Certifications: American Red Cross Adult First Aid, CPR, AED Certifications required with in-person skills session; American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certifications; Waterfront Lifeguard Certification preferred; USA Triathlon Coaching Certification preferred.
- Training: Anti-Harassment training, Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training, Gender Awareness Training, Sexual Harassment Prevention Training, Computer Security Training, Defensive Driving Course.
Performance Expectations
- Must be able to work with confidential items and understand the importance of confidentiality in project work.
- Maintain positive and effective working relationships with staff and athletes.
- Exercise tact and exhibit sound professional judgment.
- Exercise flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week.
- Commitment to adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of Associated Students/SDSU, Aztec Recreation, and sport leagues.
Schedule & Working Conditions
This is a part-time hourly position. Flexibility and willingness to work up to 25 hours per week are required. Employee schedules vary according to team needs throughout the academic year.
Physical Demands
- Physical requirements include but are not limited to: walking, walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, climbing, and working in confined space, lifting, pushing, pulling and carrying loads up to 25 pounds. Work may require standing and moving for extended periods.
Relationships
- Inside the Organization: Reports to AS/SDSU Competitive Sports Manager; interacts with Aztec Recreation Assistant Director, Competitive Sports Supervisor, Competitive Sport Program Leads, Competitive Sports Office Assistants, and Sport Club Site Supervisors; interfaces with other Aztec Recreation Staff, Aquaplex Staff, Sport Club Coaches, and Athletic Training Staff.
- Outside the Organization: Related University Personnel, Sport Governing Body, other Universities and Colleges, Professional Organizations.
