Sports Arena Maintenance I

About the role
You will perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks to operate and maintain the sports arena complex, grounds, equipment, and mechanical equipment. During the non-hockey season, you will work with the Public Works Parks Department. Training will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Maintains grounds, facilities, ice rink, public address system, and related areas.
- Prepares and grooms ice rink; hose floods, puts lines down, runs ice edger and Zamboni.
- Removes ice from rink using bobcat, power broom, floor cleaning machine, and vacuums.
- Operates, monitors, and maintains chillers and condensers on refrigeration equipment; enforces safety and environmental rules and regulations.
- Operates, maintains, and adjusts chiller and absorption equipment.
- Maintains air distribution equipment and dehumidifiers.
- Performs air quality tests in accordance with Minnesota Dept. of Health standards; maintains air quality testing equipment.
- Calibrates and tests equipment for cooling systems.
- Performs general maintenance repairs, including replacing sinks, toilets, drains, lines, and valves; maintains door hardware and hockey boards.
- Determines causes of lighting malfunctions; recommends replacing lighting equipment or systems; verifies replacement of ballasts, light switches, wiring, fuses, cables, cords, circuit breakers, and light fixtures.
- Monitors and maintains emergency backup systems.
- Diagnoses necessary vehicle and motorized equipment repairs; determines type and scope of repairs needed; advises on repairing, replacing, selling, modifying, or trading equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance; enforces safety and environmental rules and regulations.
- Performs cleaning duties: sweeps, vacuums, mops, dusts, shampoos, steam cleans, strips, waxes, polishes, and buffs floors, carpets, and furniture; dumps garbage and replaces liners; cleans and sanitizes restrooms, replenishes supplies, and cleans spills; cleans drinking fountains, mirrors, tables, walls, fixtures, blinds, and light fixtures; washes windows, walls, metal, and woodwork; cleans rain gutters, sweeps roofs and sidewalks.
- Prepares ground for seed, sod, and planting with light equipment and manual labor; mows lawns, boulevards, and fields; maintains, plants, and transplants trees and shrubs; maintains beaches; installs and maintains outdoor ice rinks.
- Performs semi-skilled and skilled interior building maintenance and repairs, including painting, floor covering, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and other trades work.
- Inspects and maintains assigned arena equipment and small tools for proper operating condition.
- Opens and closes facilities; locks and unlocks as needed.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in proper and safe building maintenance techniques.
- Responds after hours and on days off to repair sports arena equipment and perform street, park, arena, and animal control duties.
- Operates all street and park department light equipment.
- Attends meetings, training, and education to maintain competence and certifications.
- Performs all street and park department duties as assigned.
- May serve on various employee committees as required and assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent and one year’s work experience in building repair and maintenance; or any combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the required duties. Sports Maintenance II requires five years Maintenance I experience.
- Obtain and maintain a Minnesota Class A Driver’s License and CDL certification with air brakes and tanker endorsement.
- Obtain and maintain MPCA Level 1 Certification in Snow and Ice Control.
- Obtain and maintain Certified Ice Technician Certification (CIT).
- Obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid Certification.
Skills
- Working knowledge of tools, equipment, methods, operation, and materials used in building and grounds maintenance.
- Working knowledge of equipment and supplies used in the operation and maintenance of ammonia refrigeration systems.
- Working knowledge of interior electrical systems operation and maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and determine solutions to operational and maintenance problems.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently with minimal direction.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, and respond to emergencies during unscheduled time.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to perform standard procedures and tasks requiring basic analytical ability.
- Ability to work under limited supervision with general autonomy.
Physical and Mental Requirements
Positions in this job typically require frequent sitting and standing, intermittent bending or stooping, climbing, walking, and kneeling. This position is heavy duty and may require exerting up to 60 pounds of force and the ability to lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects. Benefits
- Health Insurance: Eligible from the first day of employment. The City offers four health insurance plans. The City pays 100% of the monthly premium for a single policy and contributes $1,825.00 towards a family plan. The City will contribute $250 quarterly into a Health Savings Account over the first 18 months (total contribution of $1,500).
- Vacation:
- 1st through 5th year: 80 hours per year (3.08 hours per pay period)
- 6th through 12th year: 120 hours per year (4.62 hours per pay period)
- 13th through 19th year: 160 hours per year (6.15 hours per pay period)
- 20+ years: 200 hours per year (7.69 hours per pay period)
- Sick Leave: Earned at 8 hours each month (3.70 hours per pay period). Unused sick leave accumulates to a maximum of 1,120 hours. After 36 months, severance pay is granted for one-half of unused sick leave, not to exceed 560 hours. An additional 960 hours may be accrued for catastrophic illness. Upon termination, 10% of the second sick leave bank is placed in a Post Retirement Account for health costs.
- Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML): Beginning January 1, 2026, employees are eligible for PFML benefits under Minnesota law. The City participates in an equivalent plan through MetLife. The premium is 0.79% of eligible wages, split equally between the City and employee. Provides partial wage replacement and job protection for qualifying events.
- Holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4th, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and one Personal Day.
- Post Retirement Health Care Savings Plan: Upon leaving employment, 50% of the first sick leave bank, 10% of the second sick leave bank, and all unused vacation are placed in a fund for post-retirement health care costs.
- Health Insurance for Retirees: If eligible for a PERA pension, the City contributes 50% of the premium for a family plan (up to $325/month) or 100% for a single plan (up to $325/month) until age 65 or Medicare eligibility. The benefit is calculated as three months of health insurance for each year of service.
- Public Employee Retirement Association (PERA): 6.5% employee contribution and 7.5% City contribution per payroll. Vesting occurs after five years of service.
- Life Insurance: $20,000 group life insurance plan provided by the employer.
- Deferred Compensation Program: Options for employees to defer income to a supplemental retirement plan.
- Voluntary Plans: Dental, Flexible Spending, additional Life Insurance, Cancer, Short Term Disability, and Vision Insurance (premiums paid 100% by the employee).
Pay
$26.99 - $35.37 per hour.
Schedule
- Full-time position with varied shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Required to report to work within one hour for emergencies.
- Subject to work overtime, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays year-round.
