Spiritual Health Internship Fall 2026

This is an unpaid educational program designed to fulfill one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) toward the four units required for chaplain certification, as credentialed by the Associate of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). The 10-week program is offered in Fall, Spring, and Summer, combining 100 hours of education with 300 hours of supervised clinical experience led by accredited Spiritual Health Educators. Candidates are selected through an ACPE-guided application process.

Responsibilities

• Participate and observe as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing spiritual care to patients and families.
• Collaborate with educators, team members, and other healthcare professionals to promote an environment of care, healing, and professional development.
• Engage in reflection groups, individual consultation, and didactics totaling at least 100 hours for one unit of CPE.
• Assist in leading worship services as required at each site.
• Comply with Spiritual Health, CPE, and Emory Healthcare policies, as well as infection control, safety, and OSHA procedures.
• Register with ACPE to complete one unit of Clinical Pastoral Education upon acceptance into the program.

Requirements

• Graduation from an undergraduate school or completion of a theological bachelor’s degree, or ordination by a religious/spiritual authority.

Preferred Qualifications

• Enrolled in Master’s-level theological training (wording may vary by tradition).

Physical Requirements

• Medium work: Lifting up to 50 lbs maximum, with frequent lifting/carrying of objects up to 25 lbs.
• Occasional to frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting.
• Close eye work (e.g., computers, typing, reading, writing).
• Physical demands may vary by assigned work area and tasks.

Environmental Factors

• Exposure to blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, and radiation.
• Varied floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, and potential latex exposure.
• Patient care/handling risks, shift work, and possible travel requirements.
• Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, may be required depending on assigned tasks.
