About the role
The Speech-Language Pathologist II is an experienced clinician who provides advanced evaluation and treatment for adult patients with speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders in the acute care setting. This role requires a high level of clinical judgment, autonomy, and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams to support patient safety, optimize functional outcomes, and facilitate appropriate discharge planning.
Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive evaluations and develop individualized treatment plans for patients with:
- Dysphagia (including instrumental assessments as applicable)
- Cognitive-communication deficits
- Aphasia, dysarthria, and other speech/language disorders
- Implement evidence-based interventions to improve patient function and safety
- Provide timely documentation in accordance with regulatory and organizational standards
- Make recommendations for diet, communication strategies, and discharge planning
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing, case management, and therapy teams
- Provide education to patients, families, and staff regarding communication and swallowing needs
Advanced Practice / Leadership
- Serve as a mentor/preceptor for SLP I staff, students, and new hires
- Function as a clinical resource for complex or high-risk patients
- Participate in department initiatives, program development, or specialty practice areas (e.g., dysphagia, stroke, critical care)
- Support quality improvement, data tracking, and regulatory readiness activities
Qualifications
- Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology required
- Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) required
- Active state licensure required
- Acute care experience
