Responsibilities
- Assessing and Evaluating residents with communication disorders to determine their specific needs.
- Conducting interviews, administering standardized tests, and using other assessment tools to gather information about a person's speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing abilities.
- Providing therapy and intervention services to residents with communication disorders.
- Employing various techniques and exercises to target specific speech, language, voice, fluency, or swallowing difficulties.
- Working with individuals who have experienced communication difficulties due to strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or other neurological disorders.
- Assessing and treating individuals with swallowing disorders (dysphagia) or feeding difficulties.
- Recommending and implementing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems for individuals who are unable to communicate verbally or have severe speech impairments.
- Working with clients to select appropriate AAC devices and support their effective use.
- Staying updated on the latest research and evidence-based practices in their field through continuing education, attending conferences, and participating in professional development activities.
Qualifications & Skills
- A master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communication Sciences and Disorders is generally required to practice as an SLP.
- Certification or Licensing from a recognized professional organization, such as the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
- A valid professional license and registration for the state of MN and be able to practice independently.
- Experience with long-term care and/or geriatric care is preferred.
