Summary

Speech language pathologists at Special Kids provide speech and language therapy services to children from birth to age 21 with a variety of diagnoses and developmental delays. They diagnose and evaluate speech and language skills, provide treatment, and collaborate with other disciplines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnose and evaluate speech and language skills and provide treatment to children with communication disorders, diagnoses, and developmental delays.
  • Program and provide instruction on the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices as applicable.
  • Coordinate participation in multi-sensory, educational, functional, and social activities designed to help patients develop or regain abilities and function or adapt to disabilities.
  • Select constructive activities suited to the patient’s physical capacity, comprehension level, and interest to upgrade the individual to maximum independence.
  • Instruct patients and families in treatment procedures for best carryover in multiple environments.
  • Maintain accurate and timely patient reports and documentation in electronic medical records.
  • Administer, score, and interpret evaluation reports to develop and modify an individualized treatment plan.
  • Review treatment plans, assess individual performance, and modify, change, or write new goals; observe patients during treatments and compile and evaluate data on patients’ responses to treatments and progress.
  • Maintain high patient care productivity.
  • Maintain an awareness of the patient attendance policy, enforcing it impartially and consistently at all times.
  • Consult with educational, medical, and other professional groups as well as fellow staff members.
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to incorporate speech and language goals into daily activities.
  • Research and implement new speech therapy techniques.
  • Refer patients for other services, whether internal or external, as warranted and appropriate.
  • Attend meetings and conferences and participate in other activities to promote professional growth.

Education and/or Experience

A minimum of a Master's Degree in Communication Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology with related experience and/or training is required.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

An active and unencumbered Tennessee State SLP license, Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) from ASHA, American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with CPR training, membership in ASHA, and HIPAA certification are required.

Computer Skills

Basic computer skills and the ability to learn new software and web-based applications such as electronic medical records are essential.
