About the role
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. This critical role ensures quality and customer satisfaction through accurate, timely handling of specimens. The position operates in a fast-paced, production-oriented biohazard environment with daily changes and diverse customer demands. Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to learn specimen types related to test orders are essential.
Responsibilities
- Perform A-station, pre-sort, pickup, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
- Conduct imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting of specimens.
- Maintain accuracy and timeliness in all functions to uphold quality standards.
- Adapt to daily changes in compliance regulations and test ordering requirements.
- Communicate effectively with staff at all levels and foster a positive work environment.
- Adhere to core values, safety, and compliance policies, ensuring a clean and organized workspace.
- Meet productivity and departmental completion time standards.
- Practice good safety habits in a biohazard environment.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic computer skills; knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing preferred.
- Previous laboratory experience, medical background (including medical terminology), or hospital laboratory experience is a plus.
- Experience in a production environment preferred.
- Ability to stand, lift, and move for the majority of the shift; comfortable sitting or standing for long periods.
- Data entry proficiency with a minimum of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Strong interpersonal skills and flexibility to adapt to change.
- Ability to learn and understand compliance regulations related to test ordering.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 PM to 4:30 AM.
