Specimen Technician
About the role
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) provides general support within the Specimen Processing Department. This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction, requiring strong organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to learn and understand specimen types and compliance regulations that may change daily. The role operates in a production environment with emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and departmental completion times.
The SPT I works in a biohazard environment, adhering to good safety habits, and communicates effectively with all levels of staff. Majority of work is performed on the nightshift, with availability for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed.
Responsibilities
- A-station operations
- Presort, pickup, and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory
- Imaging/microfilming of specimens
- Centrifugation and aliquoting
- Data entry with a requirement of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Adherence to core values, safety, and compliance policies and procedures
- Maintaining a neat and clean work area
- Demonstrating flexibility and adaptability to daily changes in demands
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Basic understanding of computers
- Preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing
- Previous laboratory experience preferred
- Medical background with knowledge of medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory is preferred
- Ability to sit or stand for long periods
- Strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment
- Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus
- Previous experience in a production environment preferred

Schedule
Monday–Friday, 11:30 AM–8:30 PM CST, with availability for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed.
