About the role
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position is critical to quality and customer satisfaction. The role requires flexibility to adapt to daily changes and varying customer demands. The department operates in a production environment with emphasis on productivity, quality standards, and completion times. The SPT I works in a biohazard environment and must practice good safety habits while communicating effectively with all levels of staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform functions such as A-station, pre-sort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Execute tasks with confidence, accuracy, and timeliness.
- Organize workload efficiently and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area.
- Adhere to core values, safety, and compliance policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills to foster a positive environment.
- Adapt to changes in compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of computers; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or specimen processing.
- Previous laboratory experience or medical background (including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory) is preferred.
- Previous hospital laboratory or production environment experience is a plus.
- Ability to stand, lift, and move for the majority of the shift; able to sit or stand for long periods.
- Data entry proficiency with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
