Supervisor Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides feedback for orientation and annual performance appraisals and clinical competency assessment.
- Ensures a high level of performance standards and achievement to meet organizational needs and business goals.
- Provides development opportunities for staff to broaden and enhance skills and abilities.
- Administers organization policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with safety policies and good housekeeping.
- Covers initial training of new employees and ongoing training as required.
- Promotes an environment that fosters teamwork and commitment to satisfy customer requirements.
- Develops ongoing competency assessment and opportunities to engage employees with ongoing education opportunities.
- Participates in process improvement projects for the unit, utilizing Management Daily Improvement techniques, LEAN techniques, and ownership in the process with the manager.
General Duties
- Responsible for the staff scheduling, staff development and ongoing education across specialty services.
- Formulates a teaching plan based upon the identified learning needs of staff and evaluates the effectiveness of their learning.
- Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.
- Provides general direction to department staff for daily operations, staffing, clinical activities, huddles, safety, and quality matters.
- Aids in the development of performance improvement/LEAN activities.
- Educates staff on the PI process.
- Participates in PI data collection, indicator development, and evaluation criteria.
- Maintains appropriate quality control programs.
- Participates in the development, implementation, review, and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensures all rules and regulations are observed by employees, to include overall corporate compliance and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Participates in safety reporting, root cause analysis of safety events and logging into RL Solutions.
- Implements and monitors adherence to evidence-based clinical nursing practice consistent with nursing research, organizational, and national practice standards.
- Identifies gaps and collaborates with manager to initiate strategies to improve patient care, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction.
- Sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
- Supports orientation and in-service training activities for nursing, ensuring compliance with annual educational, safety, and regulatory requirements consistent with hospital policy and procedures.
- Will provide direct and indirect patient care in the department setting when patient census and staffing require.
- Plans coverage for sick calls and staffing units in coordination with the manager.
Professional Practice
- Adheres to organizational policies and procedures.
- Adheres to professional guidelines for practice such as defined by the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, the American Nurses Association, ANA and any department-specific organization.
- Collaborates with other departments in a professional manner as needed to provide patient-centered care.

- Participates in updating and upholding standards of practice and be a role model to others for maintaining standards of care.

- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Able to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per policy and specific to unit age specific populations.
- Able to formulate and revise an individualized plan of care as indicated by the patient’s response to treatment.
- Evaluates the overall daily plan for effectiveness.
- Able to adequately assess and reassess pain.
- Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques, including nonpharmacological techniques.
- Includes the patient and family in all aspects of pain management through ongoing education about pain, assessment, treatment and common barriers to adequate management.
- Documentation meets current standards and policies.
- Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services within the scope of practice.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly with all health care team members.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Provides care appropriate to the disease condition and age of the patient.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians with procedures and performs services requiring technical and manual skills.
- Reports significant events such as near misses, adverse events, patient/family complaints, and any situation that affects the safe delivery of patient-centered care in a timely manner.
- Ensures that all infection control precautions and procedures are followed in the department.

- Functions as liaison between the patient/family, physicians, other healthcare providers and administration.

- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family; communicates with the social service/discharge planner regarding both in-hospital and post-discharge needs.
