Specialist, Mechanical Engineering
Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer will design and develop space-based optomechanical systems and/or mechanical support equipment with interfaces to precision composite structures for spacecraft payloads.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for completing optomechanical performance, manufacturing, and reliability assessments, mechanical assembly definitions, and technical specifications with supporting trade studies.
- Documentation of recommendations for presentation, review, and approval.
- Develop design concepts
- Support drawing creation, assign and evaluate tolerances, and drive drawing releases.
- Participate in cross-functional teams of engineers and designers to accomplish assignments.
- Investigate solutions to product or process problems.
- Oversight of suppliers, including technical oversight and mechanical ICD/specification development
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 4 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 2 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 8 years of prior related experience.
- Secret clearance or higher
- CAD experience, especially PTC Creo
- Experience in an aerospace and/or optics environment
- Understanding of space-based optical system design
- Experience with opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical design, tooling/fixture design
- Experience with the ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing standard
- Strong analytical skills with emphasis on using and/or directing finite element analysis (FEA) desired especially FEMAP, with knowledge of hand calculations
Preferred Additional Skills

Pay & Benefits
In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range for this role in New York state is $76,500 – $142,500. This is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
