Specialist HSS&E

Reporting to the Manager, HSS&E, the Health, Safety, Security & Environmental Specialist will assist in implementing and coordinating a comprehensive Health, Safety, Security and Environmental Management System, evaluate program effectiveness, and provide routine reports to management in accordance with Brookfield policies. The role supports locations in New England and ROC from one of our Maine or New Hampshire offices (Augusta, ME; Berlin, NH; Milford, ME; Millinocket, ME; or Skowhegan, ME).

Responsibilities

• Assist in establishing, communicating, and accomplishing annual safety, environmental, and security goals.
• Maintain and assist in implementing health, safety, security, and environmental policies and procedures.
• Implement risk management programs within Brookfield’s Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental Management System and recommend corrective/preventive measures to reduce risks.
• Recognize, practice, and advise on safe work habits in accordance with company policies and procedures; act immediately on incorrect procedures or unsafe practices, including stopping work if necessary.
• Conduct and coordinate internal and third-party Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental audits.
• Assist and participate in Safety, Security, Environmental, and Public Safety Risk Assessments.
• Coordinate and conduct planning/strategy workshops and Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental training for employees and contractors.
• Assist in new employee Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental orientations.
• Provide HSSE training in accordance with regulatory requirements and Brookfield policies, including Confined Space and Fall Protection to the level of the “Component Person.”
• Evaluate and document contractor performance regarding safety compliance.
• Conduct prequalification of consultant and contractor Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental programs.
• Assess the Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental risk and impact of company activities and projects; advise project teams on related requirements.
• Coach employees, contractors, and subcontractors on compliance with state, federal, and local regulatory licenses, permits, safety/health requirements (including OSHA), Public Safety programs, SDS databases, and hazardous material reporting.
• Support, guide, and participate in employee Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental committees.
• Assist, support, participate in, and occasionally lead incident investigations within and outside the operational group.
• Develop standard Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental operational procedures in consultation with employees and Brookfield HSS&E staff.

Requirements

• Highly self-motivated with the ability to establish and achieve goals and objectives.
• Thorough knowledge of and experience applying federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulatory requirements.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products (Outlook, Excel, Word).
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficiency in oral presentation and ability to act as a trainer; certification and/or experience to train Confined Space, Fall Protection, LOTO, and Hazard Identification to the level of the “Component Person.”
• Excellent personal organization and team skills.
• Experience with computer-based training (CBT) software systems is preferred.
• Knowledge of and experience in electrical (high and low voltage) safety practices is preferred.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, under pressure, and prioritize competing deadlines.

Qualifications

• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in preparing, implementing, and coordinating Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental programs is preferred.
• OSHA 30-hour training or ability to obtain it.
• Certification in training or verification of experience in training Fall Protection, Confined Space, LOTO, and OSHA awareness.
• A BA/BS degree in Safety Management Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel, work flexible hours (including occasional weekends, holidays, and nights), and stay overnight as needed.

Pay

$90,000–$95,000 per year, with a 10% target bonus.
