Job Summary

Southwire’s Electrical Products division (EP) is seeking an experienced mechanical engineer to lead engineering efforts and support for products released to the field. This role will interface directly with project management, product managers, and operations on product improvements, engineering changes, and compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create mechanical designs for various electrical products
  • Prepare all drawings, models, and 3D printed models for assigned products
  • Create Bill of Materials (BOM) and Costed BOMs
  • Ensure assigned products meet all industry codes and standards, such as NEC/NFPA, NEMA, UL, CSA, IEC, CEC, SAE, Prop 65, or other relevant bodies
  • Follow engineering processes and protocols, including Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Design Verification and Protocol Review (DVP&R), Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA), design reviews, FAIRs, ECRs, and PRAPs
  • Create design specifications based on Program Manager and Project Manager requests
  • Work with Project Management to advance assigned projects through stage gate approval
  • Create prototypes for testing and evaluation
  • Coordinate engineering and PRAP builds with operations engineers and managers
  • Develop certification plans for products and coordinate third-party certification units with Product Compliance Manager
  • Ensure manufacturability of assigned products and collaborate with operations engineering
  • Lead design validation testing for assigned products and projects
  • Stay updated on latest engineering and product trends to support continuous product development

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2+ years of mechanical and/or machinery design experience
  • 2+ years of manufacturing or process engineering experience preferred
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks and other CAD applications, including simulations
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including Office, Project, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively
