Specialist, Data Center Operations

Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer. Non-exempt (hourly) position within Data Center Operations.

About the role

The Operating Engineer S2 - Critical Environments will focus on operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing facility equipment across all systems. Individuals are expected to demonstrate technical expertise in one craft area (Electrical, HVAC, Piping/Plumbing, Central Utility Plant Operations) and be multi-skilled in others to successfully complete daily and weekly work assignments.

Responsibilities

• Maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems to ensure 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, CRAC, CRAH, plumbing, controls), electrical systems (lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, primary switchgear, power distribution, transformers), and hot water systems.
• Monitor, adjust, and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, air conditioning equipment, boilers, ventilating and water heaters, pumps, valves, piping, filters, and other mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Record readings and make adjustments to ensure proper operation of equipment.
• Monitor building management systems and respond to alarms promptly.
• Analyze system operations, determine causes of problems or malfunctions, and take corrective action.
• Comply with departmental policies for safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
• Learn and understand the data center site to manage incidents and events that put critical systems at risk.
• Manage work orders, including CMMS, vendor management, and customer-facing tickets.
• Understand and comply with emergency escalation procedures.
• Perform additional job duties as required.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent.
• 2+ years of related work experience.
• Preferred hands-on experience working in a data center or critical facility, including UPS systems, emergency generators, and switchgears.
• Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel.

Skills

• Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, governmental regulations, and codes.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Ability to speak effectively before small groups of tenants or fellow employees.
• Working knowledge or capability to develop proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and other software packages.
• Ability to professionally interact with tenants and contractors.
• Preferred experience with Corrigo and ServiceNow.

Physical Requirements

• Walking large, campus-like settings.
• Frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead, including lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
• Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment.
• Using ladders up to 30 ft and working from heights, including climbing a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit.
• Ability to work different schedules, including holidays.
• Ability to respond to site emergencies.
