Specialist, Birth Tissue Acquisition
Position Summary
The Birth Tissue Acquisition Specialist – Auxiliary is responsible for supporting the birth tissue donation process across the designated service area (Miami, FL to Jupiter, FL) on an as-needed basis. This includes donor screening, obtaining informed consent, coordinating tissue acquisition in compliance with regulatory standards and organizational procedures, and transportation of tissue to the BioTissue Facility. This is a flexible, deployment-based role with Suite C serving as the home base. The specialist may be assigned to multiple locations, including hospitals, birth centers, physician partner offices, and internal operational support areas, depending on daily and weekly program needs. This role requires exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, the ability to work independently, and strong collaboration with hospitals, birth centers, and internal teams. The specialist will also support donor families through aftercare initiatives, including thank-you notes and gifts, and serve as an advocate for real-time education within the hospital and patient community.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Receive initial notifications of potential birth tissue donors from referral sources.
- Present birth tissue donation options to potential donors in a sensitive and professional manner.
- Screens donors against established criteria, including obtaining informed consent and conducting donor risk assessment interviews.
- Facilitate maternal physical exam/attestation and ensure completion of required documentation.
- Maintain open communication with the AOC (Administrator On Call), Donation Coordinators/Call Center, and MDs as needed to support donation workflow.
- Collaborate with hospital staff, birth centers, and physician offices to coordinate acquisition scheduling and logistics.
- Perform birth tissue acquisition recovery per BioTissue protocol standards, ensuring strict adherence to aseptic technique and procedural compliance.
- Adapt to fluctuating work sites and assignments across the service area based on weekly operational demand, including MSMC, Jupiter, and physician partner locations.
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of all required documentation in compliance with FDA regulations, AATB standards, and HIPAA guidelines.
- Facilitate collection and shipment of blood and culture samples with complete and accurate documentation.
- Transport recovered tissue to the BioTissue facility in compliance with organizational protocols.
- Obtain hospital and OB/GYN records to ensure complete donor charting.
- Support Suite C operations by assisting with chart collection, documentation completion, and workflow continuity as needed.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with hospital staff and physician partners to support program growth and maintain organizational reputation.
- Provide real-time education and advocacy to hospital staff, nursing teams, and patients regarding birth tissue donation.
- Collaborate with pathology and internal teams to resolve issues and ensure proper honoring of each donation.
- Maintain adequate inventory of acquisition supplies and equipment at assigned sites.
- Collaborate with quality assurance and regulatory teams to ensure full compliance with organizational standards.
- Utilize personal vehicle to travel across the service area (Miami, FL to Jupiter, FL); up to 25% additional travel outside the primary region may be required.
- Maintain on-call availability as required based on operational needs.
- Work holidays, weekends, and variable shifts as needed; scheduling is driven by program demand.
- Participate in BioTissue meetings, trainings, and organizational events as required.
- Promote birth tissue donation within hospitals, physician offices, and the broader community.
Required Qualifications
- A High School Diploma or equivalent;
- An Associate’s degree in a healthcare-related field is preferred;
- Knowledge of medical terminology and good documentation practices;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn organizational information systems (e.g., iTransplant, hospital database systems).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills;
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively;
- A valid driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in healthcare environments such as medical records, surgery, or similar settings;
- Experience in eye and tissue banking;
- CTBS certification;
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills;
- Leadership capability with the ability to support and guide peers when needed;
- Bilingual (Spanish fluency in reading and writing) highly preferred.
Physical and Mental Requirements

This is a deployment-based auxiliary role designed to support variable program demand across the service area. Annual competency evaluations will be conducted to ensure continued proficiency and adherence to standards.
