Special Recreation Camp Counselor
Responsibilities
Responsible for assisting with the implementation of a recreation camp program for school age children with special needs.
Makes recommendations for adaptations to meet the needs of the children with special needs.
Provides guidance to the children in areas of personal care and behavioral issues.
Aids the Camp Supervisor in planning, promoting, organizing and implementing daily activities, special events, field trips, etc.
Organizes and leads a variety of small and large group activities each week; adapts programs to include all campers.
Supervises children in daily camp activities at all times.
Provides emotional support and encouragement to campers.
Aids in cleaning up after all activities.
Reports any accidents/incidents to the Camp Supervisor.
Assists with providing personal care, feeding, and toileting for campers as required.
Ensures that safety standards are maintained at all times.
Promotes communication with site supervisor and the parents/guardians of camp participants.
Requirements
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Current college student or a recent college/university graduate preferred.
At least 1 to 2 years of experience in Special Education, Therapeutic Recreation or related field working with children, specifically children with special needs preferred; or any equivalent education combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Exercise considerable tact and courtesy when interacting with program participants, parents and support staff.
A consistent and reliable attendance record throughout the 4-week program is required.
Available to work a revised schedule when needed.
Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
