Special Procedures Nurse, Full-Time Days (IR)

About the role

Be a part of a world-class academic health-care system at UChicago Medicine as a Special Procedures Nurse, on our main Hyde Park campus.

Responsibilities

• Under the direction of an Attending Physician or a licensed independent practitioner, RN provides technically complex and high risk nursing care services to patients which may include one or more of the following categories: sedation, intravenous infusions, complex procedures, e.g., lumbar puncture, cardiac catheterization;
• This may also include specialized monitoring during procedure and recovery phase;
• The RN may have Charge Nurse responsibility for his/her assigned unit.

Qualifications

• RN Required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred; experience may be considered in lieu of degree in addition to 5+ years clinical experience;
• Currently licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois;
• Current CPR, ACLS, and/or PALS Certifications;
• Possesses sound professional judgment for timely physician intervention as needed;
• Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate actions, initiates appropriate life supporting interventions while communicating appropriately with physicians;
• Maintains nursing equipment and work areas in proper working conditions; reports malfunctioning equipment or housekeeping issues to the appropriate person;
• Maintains a neat and clean work area with equipment;
• Maintains adequate inventory control of all necessary supplies;
• Emergency equipment maintained with adequate availability, good working order and restocks as needed with fiscal awareness and accountability;
• Interfaces with customers, specifically patients, families, visitors, and UCMC staff in a professional, positive and accommodating manner; demonstrates knowledge of AIDET principles and employs in all situations; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating special needs of customers whenever possible;
• Performs all required Quality Assurance testing as indicated or as required by UCMC;
• Rotates to clinical areas as directed to assist in safe staffing ratios; utilizes resources to safely transport sedated patients to an appropriate or designated area within the UCMC.

Preferred Qualifications

• Leadership/Management experience in area of specialty;
• Experience working in a research environment 2 to 3 years of recent Critical Care/ Emergency room nursing experience (or 2 to 3 years oncology experience);
• One additional certification in area specialty.
