About the role

Sigma-1, Fabrication Manufacturing Sciences, is seeking machinists to support R&D component manufacturing within the Machining and Inspection (M&I) Team. The M&I Team operates a modernized shop with various machining and inspection capabilities, supporting multiple Sigma Division operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform manufacturing operations, primarily machining, on a variety of materials, including special materials with specific hazards.
  • Support critical programmatic work across Sigma Division, including Foundry, Thermomechanical Processing, and Welding & Joining.
  • Work with hazardous materials and follow safety protocols.
  • Use CAD/CAM software to create machining codes and operate CNC equipment.
  • Perform non-routine tasks with supervision, requiring independent judgment and working from general instructions.
  • Accurately measure and inspect parts to meet quality standards.
  • Understand and apply basic machining processes, tools, and materials.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Student enrollment in a laboratory-approved machining pipeline program (Associate's degree or Apprenticeship).
  • The ability to work with hazardous materials.
  • Basic knowledge in setting up and operating machine equipment.
  • Basic ability to perform non-routine tasks with supervision.
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing parts made from typical materials.
  • Entry-level ability to perform precision measurements and use hand tools.
  • Some knowledge of applied material properties.

Qualifications

  • Active Q clearance preferred but not required.
  • Experience with ultrasonic machining equipment.
  • Experience working with ceramic materials.

Essential Job Functions

  • Good hand-eye coordination and fine motor control.
  • Ability to lift/carry 30-40 lbs.
  • Able to acquire and maintain rigorous training as required.

Work Location

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position Commitment

The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Multiple positions will be filled at the Special Materials Machinist 1-5 levels (see other postings) depending on applicant qualifications and experience.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
