About the role

The Special Education Teacher provides individualized and group instruction to incarcerated high school-aged students and young adults within the correctional education setting. The teacher is responsible for delivering standards-based instruction, implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promoting academic achievement, and supporting students' social-emotional growth while maintaining compliance with educational, special education, and correctional facility regulations.

Reports to: Assistant Superintendent for Educational Programs

Responsibilities

  • Deliver instruction aligned with New York State Learning Standards and high school graduation requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with federal and state special education regulations.
  • Conduct academic assessments and collect data to monitor student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, abilities, and educational backgrounds.
  • Collaborate with correctional staff, school administrators, counselors, psychologists, related service providers, and community agencies.

Requirements

  • Valid State Teaching Certification in Special Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or related field (Master's preferred)

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed within a secure correctional facility.
  • Must comply with all facility security procedures and requirements.
  • Frequent interaction with incarcerated youth and young adults.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and appropriate boundaries in a correctional setting.

Pay

$60,000 - $85,000
