Special Education Teacher

BASIS Phoenix South is a Title I campus serving a high percentage of students from low-income families. Through the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, the school receives additional federal funding and support to help ensure all children have the opportunity to succeed. Many teachers are drawn to Title I schools to make a difference for high-needs students, give back to their communities, or follow the example of influential educators in their own lives.

About the role

The Special Education Teacher works directly with students to identify and deliver the educational services and supports outlined in each student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). The role includes participating in IEP meetings and assisting general education teachers with classroom interventions, accommodations, modifications, and special-education requirements.

Responsibilities

• Work with students with disabilities in small-group or one-on-one settings.
• Interact directly with assigned students to fulfill IEP requirements.
• Deliver specially designed instruction and facilitate related services to meet service-minute provisions in student plans.
• Provide instructional interventions and academic support to individuals or small groups.
• Serve as case manager for students with disabilities, coordinating IEP team meetings, parent communication, program development, service provision, and IEP implementation.
• Ensure compliance with all state and federal special-education requirements.
• Facilitate IEP meetings and collaborate with general-education teachers to implement IEP requirements, ensuring a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
• Collect and maintain confidential documentation related to IEPs, including data from classroom teachers and providers for upcoming meetings, progress on annual goals, and regulatory reporting.
• Adapt general-education curriculum to deliver specially designed instruction to eligible students.
• Perform CPI or TACT-2 certified restraint or seclusion as needed.
• Coordinate regularly with related-service providers to schedule student services and IEP meetings.
• Oversee day-to-day tasks of Educational Support Services (ESS) Assistants and/or Special Education Specialists.
• Proctor individual or small-group testing for state, district, or alternate assessments.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card and/or satisfactory state background check.
• Current special-education certificate valid in the relevant jurisdiction.
• CPR and First Aid certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in special education or a Master’s degree in special education or a related field.
• One or more years of special-education experience.
• CPI or TACT-2 certification.
