Special Education Implementation Transition Technician

About the Role

Provides internship training and support to special education high school students with disabilities at various job sites. Transports students to and from job sites, assists with recordkeeping, and provides clerical support.

Responsibilities

• Trains and supports students at job sites, including implementing task analysis, monitoring performance, data collection, prompting, and modeling work tasks through task analysis worksheets.
• Collaborates with business owners to adjust tasks as necessary.
• Transports students to and from job sites, assisting them with boarding or exiting the vehicle.
• Performs safety inspections prior to operating the vehicle and ensures regular maintenance.
• Maintains vehicle cleanliness, heating, and ventilation.
• Creates and maintains records, including reports on discipline problems, incidents, or injuries.
• Provides clerical support, such as copying, collating, answering phones, typing correspondence, reports, and forms.
• Acts as a liaison for youth between various systems.
• Completes and submits monthly and weekly reports, including pre-trip inspection forms, mileage, student attendance, route forms, maintenance defect reports, student conduct referrals, vandalism, and injury reports.
• Operates specialized school buses equipped with wheelchair lifts, securement devices, positioning devices, child safety restraint systems, and other equipment.
• Uses office equipment, including computers and fax machines.
• Makes independent decisions to resolve issues when students do not understand expectations, with supervisory approval required for substantial program changes.
• Enforces safety and conduct regulations using age-appropriate physical handling, communication, and behavior management techniques.

Requirements

• Some knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior management techniques, academic subjects, types of disabilities, exceptional education policies, and school bus operation laws and regulations.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise children, redirect student work, perform clerical tasks, and communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to collaborate professionally with students, staff, business personnel, and parents.
• Ability to apply first aid procedures, including CPR.
• Ability to operate a large vehicle safely in all weather conditions using defensive driving methods.
• Ability to maintain bus discipline and provide constant attention to children with special health conditions or disabilities.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting children and working under stressful conditions or emergencies.
• Ability to establish supportive relationships with youth in transition.

Qualifications

• Prefer two years of college or equivalent education, training, or experience.
• Valid Virginia Driver’s License required; CDL License with passenger endorsement recommended.
• Must meet physical qualifications for school bus drivers and complete a state-approved school bus driver training course.
• First Aid and CPR course recommended.
• Must successfully complete background investigations/tests, including FBI Criminal History, State Police Criminal History, Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigation, and Tuberculosis Screening/Test.

Pay

$21,984.53 - $37,385.39 per year.

Schedule

6.5 hours per day, 183 days per year.
