About the role

The Special Education Coordinator supports students at risk of academic underperformance due to emotional and/or physical challenges, ensuring they thrive within the school's rigorous academic program.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all students receive necessary educational services;
  • Identify and address special education needs during intake assessments;
  • Schedule and provide pull-out services as needed;
  • Coordinate and chair team and pre-referral meetings;
  • Conduct academic and psychological testing;
  • Maintain and update student records;
  • Ensure compliance with special education laws;
  • Design and administer rigorous assessments;
  • Create a structured, humane, and academically rigorous learning environment;
  • Collaborate with other teachers, staff, and administrators.

Qualifications

  • Drive to improve students' minds and lives;
  • Proven track record of high achievement in the classroom;
  • Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects;
  • Self-motivation and willingness to be a team player;
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;
  • Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferred;
  • Special Education teaching certification required;
  • Belief in and alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy.
