Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and technical expertise in special education programs and services.
  • Facilitates division-wide functions and initiatives under IDEA and Section 504.
  • Improves student achievement, performance, behavior, attendance, and access to educational opportunities.
  • Program coordination, professional learning, technical assistance, compliance monitoring, data analysis, and support for effective instructional and service delivery practices.
  • Collaborates with school administrators, educators, related service providers, families, and departments.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education and related services for qualifying students.
  • Coordinates the activities of support personnel assigned to special education or related services instruction.
  • Collaboratively designs best practice approaches for students requiring IEPs and assists with monitoring the fidelity of program implementation.
  • Collaborates with various school and district personnel in resolving student-related concerns.
  • Makes recommendations based on data trends from division, school, and student data.
  • Prevents and prepares for special education and/or Section 504 dispute resolution, including due process hearings.
  • Organizes and assigns programs and personnel to provide optimum delivery of services.
  • Engages in interdepartmental collaboration to support student academic and behavioral success.
  • Provides necessary professional development and training opportunities to a variety of audiences and stakeholders, including parents/guardians.
  • Coordinates the selection, procurement, and inventory of assessment tools, instructional materials, and equipment.
  • Aids in the development, expenditure, and monitoring of departmental budgets and funds.
  • Aids in developing and monitoring special education staffing allocations/caseloads/rosters for assigned areas, including recruitment and hiring of program staff.
  • Participates in meaningful professional development to remain current in special education law and instructional best practices.

Job Requirements

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, or related field required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional license with preferred endorsements in Special Education and Administration and Supervision.
  • Must possess at least three years of teaching experience that includes experience with students with disabilities.
  • Must possess in-depth knowledge of federal and state regulations that govern educating students with disabilities.
