Under the Director for Special Education, the Special Education Community Support Coordinator will support the implementation of the Chancellor’s vision for special education by educating families about special education in NYC Public Schools and surfacing systemic issues raised by families, along with plans for short- and long-term resolution.
Responsibilities
- Provides support, professional development, and resources to president’s councils, community and Citywide Education Councils (CECs), District Leadership Teams (DLTs), and OFDC Family Leadership Coordinators (FLCs).
- Develops workshops for parent leaders, district, and school staff.
- Creates borough-specific toolkits of local resources and supports for parents of students with disabilities to share with OFDC, Family Support Coordinators (FSCs), parent coordinators, and parent leaders.
- Acts as a trusted intermediary between NYCPS and families, providing assistance and helping to resolve conflicts.
- Develops and maintains a public email inbox for families and external partners.
- Oversees concerns raised by the community on behalf of students with disabilities.
- Partners with superintendents, OFDC, FSCs, supervisors of psychologists, school leaders, and school-based CSEs to address family concerns.
- Directs field staff in supporting programmatic and educational resolution on behalf of students.
- Utilizes school systems (SESIS, ATS, SIS) to serve as an information source and conduit between conflicting parties.
- Thoroughly investigates and resolves complaints, educates constituents on their rights, and shares results with leadership to flag systemic needs.
- Provides a weekly data report on resolutions for families of students with disabilities to Central and the Family Support and Operations Manager, highlighting figures and trends.
- Supports schools in effectively engaging parents of students with disabilities.
- Uses independent judgment to resolve issues raised on behalf of students with disabilities.
Requirements
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described; or
- High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities related to the duties described; or
- An equivalent combination of education and/or experience, provided all candidates have at least one year of experience as described above.
- Two additional years of relevant work experience beyond the minimum requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong student and family service orientation.
- At least three years of progressively responsible experience in education, civil rights, or public interest fields.
- Experience working with SESIS and other school systems.
- Strong strategic thinking skills; ability to gather and analyze information.
- Experience performing statistical research; ability to develop and follow research methodology and generate reports.
- Strong communication skills; ability to organize facts and present information clearly and concisely.
- Creative problem solver with the ability to perform independent, thoughtful analysis on educational issues.
- Experience in conflict resolution and stakeholder management; ability to build strong working relationships with diverse constituencies.
- Ability to work collaboratively and cross-functionally.
- Attentive to detail, highly organized, and able to work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
- Interest in education reform and implementation.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 applications.
Pay
$72,114 (Internal candidates who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
