About the role

The Special Education Assistant Teacher for Inclusion Program at Barbieri Elementary School supports students with disabilities under the direction of a certified teacher. The position involves assisting with general classroom activities, helping students with disabilities, and ensuring their physical, emotional health and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the instruction and supervision of students, supporting them academically, socially, and behaviorally in an inclusionary setting.
  • Support students with special needs by following IEP provisions and administering tests and assessments.
  • Collect and report data for individual students, addressing concerns and progress.
  • Escort and supervise students to and from various school facilities and areas.
  • Aid in establishing a positive learning environment and meeting the individual needs of students.
  • Perform daily tasks such as eating, mobility, communication, dressing, and toileting support, including diapering.
  • Promote independence for students with disabilities.
  • Safeguard confidential information to comply with FERPA and HIPAA.
  • Assist in planning and implementing lessons aligned with district and school goals.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, inputting information and reading material from a computer monitor.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and other staff members in person, via email, and on the telephone.
  • Provide services that may involve lifting, pushing, and providing assistance to students.

Requirements

Associate (or higher) degree or at least two years of post-secondary education equivalent to 48 credit hours from an accredited higher education institution, or passing the Parapro Test. Some experience working with children, especially students with disabilities in areas like Autism, Developmental Delays, Multiple Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, and Emotional Disabilities, is preferred. Additional specialized training in child development, education, or a related field is desirable. Bilingual proficiency in Spanish is desirable.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and student records.

  • Proficiency in using technology and willingness to learn new tools.
  • Willingness to plan, coordinate, and participate in ongoing professional learning, coaching, and staff development.
  • Experience in evaluating student skills, interpreting assessment data, and writing clear, concise reports.
