About the role

The Special Education Teacher position is responsible for teaching basic social, academic, and home living related skills to students in schools and centers. They collaborate with staff and parents to develop Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and Functional Behavioral Assessments (FBAs) as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in eligibility process and in-take process after student is determined eligible for special education programs.
  • Affirms student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Collaborates with staff and parents to develop IEPs and FBAs.
  • Develops or modifies curricula and prepares lessons and instructional materials.
  • Plans and implements instructional, therapeutic, or skill development programs.
  • Manages student behavior to ensure a conducive learning environment.
  • Coordinates educational activities with other professionals.
  • Continually assesses student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Uses a variety of instructional materials and technology to enhance learning.
  • Communicates with parents and school personnel regarding the student's progress.
  • Manages classroom and instructional environments to promote student achievement.
  • Supervises care and feeding of students as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Possession of a current Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional and technical journals, governmental regulations, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to inquiries from staff and regulatory agencies.
  • Ability to write reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administration, students, and parents.
  • Ability to work mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
  • Ability to interpret and present mathematical curriculum to students.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, parents, and the community.
  • Ability to work as a team member.
  • Ability to maintain personal self-control in stressful situations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to lift minimum of 25 pounds or more.
  • Ability to work irregular or extended hours.
