The Naval Academy Athletic Association (NAAA), founded in 1891, is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to "promote, influence, and assist in financing the varsity athletic programs of the midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy" in accordance with the policy of the Superintendent of the Academy. Through an intercollegiate athletics program that is one of the largest in the country, every midshipman is afforded the opportunity to compete in athletics at the Division I level. The emphasis on physical fitness is borne out in the first line of the mission of the U.S. Naval Academy: To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically.

About the Role

The Special Assistant to the Head Coach serves as a strategic member of the Navy Men’s Basketball staff responsible for advancing the program’s brand, enhancing the recruiting experience, strengthening alumni engagement and producing compelling content that reflects the values and mission of Navy Basketball. This individual will work closely with the Head Coach on special projects, communications, relationship management, storytelling and day-to-day operations while helping execute a first-class experience for alumni, student-athletes, recruits and fans.

Responsibilities

  • Alumni Relations: Support the Head Coach by producing a quarterly newsletter in conjunction with the Development and Letterwinners Association, write feature stories, highlight players’ accomplishments, and coordinate all alumni engagements during the year and the banquet/awards for the program.
  • On-campus Recruiting: Help build customized visit itineraries, coordinate meetings, meals, photography, and recruiting presentations and graphics.
  • Brand Management: Develop annual social media strategy in conjunction with the Director of Social Media, manage social content calendar, produce features, coordinate graphic requests with Athletics Communications, develop year-long content campaigns, create end-of-season highlights for the program, and coordinate all photo and video shoots.
  • Special Projects and Administrative Duties: Serve as the Head Coach’s point person for special projects and day-to-day program operations, help prepare presentations and speaking materials, assist with summer camp promotions and enrollment, coordinate special events with donors, coordinate signage for the program in facilities to align with Navy Athletics branding, and coordinate award nominations and recognition pieces through interviews and storytelling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, creative media, sports administration, business administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, calendars, and competing priorities.
  • Experience in creative media, communications, marketing, athletics, or related fields.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, calendar management, spreadsheets, presentations, and database systems.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, reports, presentations, meeting materials, and other documents on behalf of the Head Coach.
  • Experience with social media management, photography, videography, graphic design, or video editing preferred.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism and discretion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail, accuracy, and follow-through.
  • Ability to maintain organized records, contact lists, alumni databases, recruiting materials, and program files.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and video editing software preferred.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States of America, without sponsorship.
  • Must be eligible to work on a military installation, including a willingness to submit to a background screen.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • This is an in-person position.

Work Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Occasional standing or walking (e.g., to retrieve files, go to meetings).
  • Hand and finger dexterity (e.g., typing, using a mouse, handling paperwork).
  • Repetitive hand and wrist movements (e.g., keyboarding, data entry).
  • Visual acuity (e.g., reading screens, documents).
  • Hearing ability (e.g., participating in phone calls, video conferences).
  • Minimal lifting requirements (usually under 10–15 lbs, such as files, laptops).
  • Basic upper body movement (e.g., reaching for office supplies, opening drawers).
  • Occasional bending or twisting (e.g., picking up items, adjusting seating).
  • Cognitive focus and mental stamina (e.g., prolonged concentration on tasks).
  • Travel: Team travel will be required during the basketball season.
