About the role
The Philanthropies Department (PHI) invites individuals and families to follow the example of Jesus Christ by living the two great commandments—love God and love neighbors. PHI facilitates and invites voluntary philanthropic giving (beyond tithes and fast offerings) for programs and projects approved by the First Presidency, teaching, engaging, coordinating, inviting, and reporting on these contributions to the Church and its affiliated charities.
As a Senior Communications Specialist – Brand/Grants, you will serve as a “grant writer/brand manager,” creating exceptional marketing and communication materials that facilitate, engage, and invite donors to participate in inspired giving experiences aligned with the Church’s divinely appointed mission. This senior-level individual contributor role supports the Marketing Communications team by serving as the caretaker for all grant-writing proposals and responses tied to specific “brands” (e.g., Missionary, BYU), ensuring creative marketing activities align with technical application requirements to inspire donors.
Clients include prospects, donors, institutional leaders, and PHI colleagues. Teaching, engaging, coordinating, inviting, and stewarding are core accountabilities in every project.
Responsibilities
In alignment with PHI’s core functions—Teach, Engage, Coordinate, Invite, and Report—this role allocates time as follows:
- Teach (15%)
- Educate current donors and prospects about the Church’s philanthropic process through tailored communication and marketing collateral for assigned priorities.
- Train donor liaisons, partners, and staff on the technical requirements of grant-related communications and applications.
- Engage (20%)
- Create inspiring and informative communication pieces that comply with technical grant proposal requirements, motivating donors and prospects to engage with approved priorities.
- Develop meaningful marketing materials that integrate givers and receivers of donations in a personalized way.
- Coordinate (20%)
- Collaborate with colleagues, partners, external organizations, approved vendors, and Church correlation to ensure all products meet PHI and Church standards as well as exacting grant application requirements.
- Invite (30%)
- Craft meaningful invitations, including grant proposals and other materials, to assist donor liaisons and institutional partners in facilitating inspiring giving experiences and strengthening donor relationships.
- Report (15%)
- Produce meaningful stewardship and financial reports that inform and delight donors about the impact of their giving.
Requirements
- Uphold and adhere to all policies and procedures of the Church and its affiliated charities, demonstrating ethical behavior and professional demeanor at all times.
- Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of compatible professional experience in communications or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Proficiency with personal computers, basic hardware/software, and job-specific applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and other design tools).
- Proven writing skills and a sound knowledge of print and electronic communications, including graphic design principles.
- Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and efficiently with strong time management and organizational skills, including attention to fine details.
- Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional customer service to clients, including prospects, donors, institutional leaders, and PHI colleagues.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, innovative thinking, and self-motivation, with the ability to positively inspire others to strive for their best performance.

- Physical ability to fulfill logistical needs during event support, including lifting 20–30 lbs (e.g., delivery and setup of materials, signage, audiovisual equipment).
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPA) and/or extensive experience in creating marketing communications.
- Grant writing experience.
- Non-profit organization or fundraising experience.
- Experience using project management software.
