SPD Instrument Coordinator/ 40hr Eve- Sterile Processing

About the role

The Instrument Coordinator ensures the highest quality standards are met by following departmental procedures and established industry standards. This role organizes workflow, prioritizes processes to meet the surgical schedule, and handles the processing, inspection, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation, loaner equipment, and supplies for various departments. The position requires adherence to NWH Policies and Procedures, IAHCSMM, and CBSPD standards, and maintaining CRCST or CBSPD certification throughout employment.

Responsibilities

• Prioritize instrument decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and surgical case picking based on the surgical schedule.
• Assist and collaborate with Operating Room staff in revising surgical instrument kits.
• Act as a resource for technicians regarding instrument identification, kit assembly, and department processes.
• Serve as a preceptor for the orientation, training, and evaluation of new staff, clinical students, and volunteers.
• Manage the loaner instrumentation process and monitor total joint and other consignment instrumentation for completeness.
• Verify sterilization cycles, biological tests, and associated documentation.
• Complete daily shift reports and communicate status updates to other shifts.
• Pick supplies and instruments for surgical cases using surgeon-specific preference cards, prioritize, and set up case carts in the Operating Room.
• Perform disassembly, cleaning, disinfection, decontamination, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation and other equipment.
• Leak test, evaluate, clean/disinfect, and process flexible endoscopes.
• Inspect instrumentation, ensure proper function, assemble instrument kits, and prepare instruments/kits for sterilization.
• Load, operate, monitor, and complete documentation for all decontamination, disinfection, sterilization, and monitoring equipment.
• Perform and document all chemical, mechanical, and biological monitoring of sterilizers and other equipment.
• Respond effectively to emergency case requirements of the surgical team and other departments.
• Assess instruments, components, and supplies for adequate levels and request necessary replacements in a timely manner.
• Stock adult, pediatric, and neonate code carts and intubation boxes.
• Utilize various computer systems and applications.
• Function independently in the absence of the Manager or Supervisor; act as charge person when necessary.
• Maintain certified status (C.R.C.S.T.) by accumulating continuing education units.
• Rotate between the main SPD, GI, and OSC Departments as needed.
• Set up procedure rooms, including opening rooms, managing CO2, suction, and scope flush systems.
• Obtain and set up scopes for the shift, highlighting scope types (e.g., gastroscope, colonoscope).
• Maintain scope storage in a secure, dry room with specialized drying closets.
• Transport scopes to procedure rooms using designated carts and trays.
• Sign on to computer systems, verify patient information, and maintain HIPAA standards.
• Use proper PPE, pre-clean scopes at the bedside, and document scope usage.
• Maintain and clean equipment, including flushing systems with enzymatic and bleach solutions.
• Stock rooms at the end of the day following par levels.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent education.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Successful completion of a Central Processing Technology Course or Surgical Technician Program.
• At least four years of sterile processing experience performing all Sterile Processing functions within an operative setting.
• Endoscopy experience preferred.

Qualifications

• Registered Central Service Technician (C.R.C.S.T) or Certified Sterile Process/Distribution Technician (C.S.P.D.T) or equivalent certification required.
• Excellent organization, operations, people management, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to speak, read, write, and understand medical terminology.
• Working knowledge of computer programs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and instrument tracking software.
• Existing knowledge of EPIC and CSIQ/SPM preferred.
• Ability to multi-task is critical.

This position is classified as Pay Range / Grade 6. Base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other essential factors. The base pay information provided is an estimate based on minimum job qualifications.
