About the role

Boeing Commercial Airplanes is seeking a Spar Mill Operator - Numerical Control to join our Fabrication team in Auburn, Washington. In this role, you will operate advanced numerical control spar mills, ensuring precision and quality in aircraft component production. You will maintain a safe work environment by adhering to safety protocols and proactively addressing potential issues to uphold regulatory compliance and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Set-up, adjust, and operate numerical controlled spar mills to perform machining operations.
  • Operate machines to make the first run of new or revised numerically directed machining programs.
  • Observe and check operations to detect errors; suggest corrections or revisions in numerical programs.
  • Select suitable or specified cutting tools and verify their functionality through visual and dimensional checks.
  • Use precision measuring instruments, gauges, tools, and shop math, including trigonometry.
  • Interpret charts, set-up documents, orders, blueprints, and tooling; perform layout tasks.
  • Use and adjust feed rates of oils and coolants.
  • Detect faulty tools and take corrective action according to shop practices and procedures.
  • Position, locate, and secure work pieces in or on work-holding devices.
  • Operate and set machine controls to cycle, recycle, start, and stop machine operations; synchronize tape and cutting tools with specified start points.
  • Coordinate efforts with assigned employees, assisting in machine set-up, operation, adjustment, loading, unloading, and cleaning.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards

  • Perform physical tasks including lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.
  • Engage in movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.
  • Work in environments involving contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.
  • Operate near moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.
  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.
  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet.

This position is 100% onsite and must meet Export Control compliance requirements. A “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.62 (U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee) is required.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience setting up and operating Manual and CNC machines.
  • 1+ years of experience setting and using precision measuring tools (e.g., micrometers, calipers, dial indicators).
  • 1+ years of experience using software applications for internet navigation, email, Microsoft Suite, or other specialized computer applications.
  • 1+ years of experience working with powered hand tools.
  • 1+ years of experience reading and interpreting drawings or blueprints.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1+ years of hands-on experience with overhead cranes.
  • 1+ years of experience in airplane fabrication.
  • Graduation from a Machinist Apprenticeship program or completion of a Machining Certificate.

High school graduate or GED preferred. Current Boeing employees in Puget Sound must submit an Employee Request Transfer (ERT) to be considered.

Schedule

This role is primarily third shift, with potential additional shift requirements to support program objectives. This position is governed by the International Association of Machinists (IAM-751) Collective Bargaining agreement.

Pay

$31.32/hour, with potential to earn up to $59.47/hour in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
