Job Summary

Under the direction of the Patient Experience Operations Manager, the Spanish Interpreter provides medical interpretation for clinical and non-clinical encounters to enable communication between patients and families who are limited English proficient and/or hearing impaired and clinicians and other hospital staff. Interpretation will be provided in person or by telephone in compliance with National Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, Brigham and Women's Hospital policies and procedures, and Interpreter Services guidelines to ensure patient safety and access to quality care.

Essential Functions

  • Answers requests effectively and in a timely manner for face to face or telephone interpretations for all types of encounters throughout the hospital with priority given to emergency and urgent requests.
  • Interprets and transmits accurately and in understandable terms, complex medical information from medical records to patients and families.
  • Translates and conveys medical information from patients and families to clinicians and other hospital staff.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required and Associate's Degree preferred
  • Experience Fluency in English and Spanish, both written and verbal, required
  • Prior Training of Medical Terminology and Interpreting Skills Preferred
  • Two years of healthcare related experience in a position of direct patient contact preferred
  • Knowledge of culture-specific care
