About the Role
To provide accurate and timely communication with non-English speaking families and ensure compliance with federal and state laws and Office for Civil Rights while promoting alignment and consistency across all schools and departments by recruiting and retaining quality interpreters and translators.
Responsibilities
- Interpret consecutively or simultaneously for parents during, but not limited to, parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, expulsion hearings, student disciplinary hearings, admissions process, and at school and district meetings as needed.
- Provide information about school and community resources & services to families.
- Facilitate communication and understanding between families, school, and community while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
- Act as a cultural link between parents, students, school, staff, and community and work with staff to facilitate social and cultural adjustment in school.
- Collaborate and coordinate resources with school parent liaisons, other parent partnership groups in the schools, district, and in the community to assist Spanish-speaking families and students.
- Translate documents for distribution including handbooks, guides, legal notices, forms, policies and regulations, discipline and internet use documents, relevant applications, etc. Utilize a variety of tools including software, dictionaries, publications, and web-based research.
Requirements
- Bilingual and bi-literate in English and Spanish as determined by required district assessment.
- Skilled in interpersonal relations.
- Ability to work with others in a team setting.
- Advanced knowledge of Spanish educational terms, phrases, and acronyms.
- Intermediate knowledge of inter-cultural communication including sociolinguistic diversity and variance.
- Operating knowledge of and experience with word processing and interpreting systems.
- Knowledge of translation software and features for Microsoft Word is required within six months after hire.
- Cultural mediation training and translation/interpretation training coursework completed within twelve months after hire.
Qualifications
- Interpreter Certification or Bachelor’s degree in Spanish or related field preferred.
- Language interpreting experience (preferred).
Physical and Mental Demands
- Concentrated reading, writing, and mathematics.
- Working with others and working alone.
- Noisy environment and normal office environment.
- Occasional bending, reaching, climbing.
- Light physical effort (lifting under 10 pounds).
- Confined sitting (limited freedom to move about).
- Eye/hand coordination (e.g., typing, ten key).
