The Medical Education Learning Specialist serves as a key member of the Student Academic Success Team at A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA).

About the role

This position supports osteopathic medical students through individualized academic coaching, learning strategy development, wellness-focused interventions, and collaborative student success programming.

Responsibilities

  • Support osteopathic medical students through individualized academic support meetings, assessing academic performance, identifying barriers to learning, and developing personalized learning plans.
  • Provide coaching in evidence-based learning strategies, metacognition, self-regulated learning, clinical reasoning, and standardized test preparation.
  • Assist students preparing for COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2 examinations and other required licensure assessments.
  • Support students with work/life integration, wellness planning, resilience, and academic stress management.
  • Design and facilitate workshops on academic success strategies, study skills, board preparation, time management, test-taking skills, wellness, and learning science principles.
  • Create educational materials and resources that support diverse learning needs and promote learner engagement.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and records related to student interactions and interventions while adhering to FERPA and institutional guidelines.
  • Collaborate with student achievement specialists, counseling services, ATSU accommodation liaison, ATSU Learning Resources and Student Affairs, faculty advisors, tutoring services, and community partners to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Advocate for inclusive learning environments and equitable student access to institutional resources.
  • Support initiatives that foster trust, belonging, professionalism, and community within ATSU-SOMA.
  • Participate in committees, student success initiatives, and interdisciplinary collaborations that advance holistic learner support.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required in education, counseling, psychology, higher education, learning sciences, health professions education, student affairs, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in academic support, advising, coaching, student affairs, or related educational settings.
  • Experience providing services in at least three of the following areas: Academic coaching and learning strategy development for didactic, clinical, and standardized testing environments.
  • Licensure examination preparation in osteopathic medicine or health sciences (e.g., COMLEX-USA, USMLE, PANCE, NPTE).
  • Work/life integration, time management, and student wellness support.
  • Medical, osteopathic, health sciences, or higher education environments.
  • Support for high-achieving learners and students in rigorous academic programs.
  • Experience supporting students with disabilities and accommodation implementation.
  • Experience working with diverse learners.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of learning theory, cognitive psychology, metacognition, and evidence-based study strategies.
  • Familiarity with remediation practices and competency-based medical education.
  • Experience facilitating workshops or group learning interventions.
  • Strong understanding of student wellness, burnout prevention, and holistic learner development.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student sense of belonging initiatives in higher education.
  • Familiarity with community-based and distributed medical education models.
