Solid Waste Flow Control Officer - Cortland County Solid Waste
About the role
This position exists at the Cortland County Landfill and is responsible for investigating alleged flow control violations. The incumbent follows procedures to ensure each case is properly presented to the Solid Waste hearing board and maintains records relating to violations. The role also ensures that disposal of recycled and solid waste conforms to agreements between the County and the hauler as well as Cortland County’s local law. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Supervisor, Solid Waste Management and the Superintendent of Highways. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of this class, though related work may be performed as required.
Responsibilities
- Investigate alleged flow control violations at the landfill.
- Prepare and present cases to the Solid Waste hearing board.
- Maintain accurate records of violations and related documentation.
- Ensure disposal of recycled and solid waste complies with County‑hauler agreements and local law.
- Perform duties under direct supervision of solid waste management leadership.
- Perform related work as required.
Minimum qualifications
- Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
- One (1) year of full‑time (or part‑time equivalent) experience in one of the following:
- Inspecting buildings, solid waste facilities, construction sites, public safety sites, landfills, transfer stations, or related sites for compliance with codes, laws, or regulations.
- Serving as a code enforcement officer.
- Law enforcement experience.
Special requirements
- Valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintenance of the license for the duration of the appointment.
- Successful completion of pre‑employment screenings.
Pay
$30.00 per hour.
Schedule
Per diem; no benefits.
