SOIL & MATERIAL TESTING TECHNICIAN I
About the role
The Department of Design and Construction, Civil Division, is hiring for two (2) entry-level Soil & Material Testing Technicians in Honolulu. These positions involve learning, practicing, and assisting with laboratory and field testing of soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt samples. The roles also include preparing test reports and documentation, maintaining laboratory facilities, and operating vehicles to and from various job and field sites.
Responsibilities
- Learn, practice, and assist with laboratory testing of soil, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt samples.
- Prepare test reports and documentation.
- Assist in preparing chain-of-custody documents.
- Conduct field testing to provide data for in-situ site conditions.
- Assist experienced Technicians with conducting field testing.
- Maintain laboratory facilities and equipment.
- Operate a motor vehicle to and from various offices and job and field sites.
Requirements
- Education: Equivalent to graduation from high school.
- Experience: Two years of general work experience.
- Licenses: Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license.
Qualifications
At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
Skills
Knowledge of industry standards for laboratory and field testing, ability to operate laboratory equipment, and proficiency in data preparation and documentation.

Pay
- Soil & Material Testing Technician I: SR-11 ($3,606)
- Soil & Material Testing Technician II: SR-13 ($3,900)
- Soil & Material Testing Technician III: SR-15 ($4,221)
- Soil & Material Testing Technician IV (supervisor): SR-19 ($4,933)

Hours and schedule are flexible and may vary based on project needs.
