Red Hat · Lowell, MA · 1 mo ago
On-siteEngineering$96k–$154k/yrFull-time

About the role

Join the team that makes sure Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and OpenShift integrate seamlessly with the latest networking hardware, including SmartNICs and DPUs. In this role, you will serve as the bridge between physical hardware and cloud software, ensuring the foundation of the platform is rock solid.

What your day-to-day looks like

  • Write & implement code: Spend most of your time writing C, Python, or Go to integrate new hardware features into core platforms.
  • Troubleshoot & debug: Dig into drivers and the Linux kernel to identify and resolve hardware-OS communication issues.
  • Smart automation: Identify repetitive manual tasks (such as testing or deployment) and write scripts to automate them, keeping the team efficient.
  • Collaborate & ship: Work alongside senior engineers to transform requirements into functional, enterprise-grade code that delivers value to customers.
  • Innovate with AI: Act as a technical explorer, proactively researching and integrating emerging AI technologies into the software development lifecycle to optimize workflows, tooling, and efficiency.

What you will bring to the table

  • Solid Linux skills: Navigate the Linux terminal with ease and have a strong grasp of how the kernel handles networking and drivers.
  • Networking experience: Some practical experience with networking concepts and technologies.
  • Polyglot coding: Comfortable writing C (for low-level work) and either Python or Go (for tooling and automation), with a focus on functionality over language preference.
  • A testing mindset: Write durable code and understand that work is not complete until it is tested and integrated into a CI/CD pipeline.
  • Problem-solving curiosity: Enjoy troubleshooting hardware/software interactions and are willing to dive into complex codebases.

Bonus skills (nice to have)

  • Container exposure: Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift and an understanding of their interaction with the underlying OS.
  • DevOps basics: Familiarity with Jenkins, GitLab CI, or Ansible for workflow automation.
  • Open source mindset: Comfortable navigating GitHub, reviewing others' code, and contributing to upstream projects such as the OPI Project.
