Softball Head Coach - Stipend position

About the Role

To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize individual and team success. Students will receive instruction that fosters moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence.

Responsibilities

• Organize and administer coaching for the assigned team, enforcing all rules of the CIAC and the CCC as they pertain to the sport.
• Arrange a pre-season meeting with students and parents to discuss rules, regulations, and expectations.
• Coach individual participants in sport-specific skills to achieve excellence.
• Distribute and discuss the following with all student-athletes (secure necessary signatures):
  • CIAC Regulations
  • Student Athlete Handbook
  • Eligibility Requirements
  • Expectations during practice sessions and contests
• Promote respect through example in appearance, manners, behavior, language, and conduct.
• Ensure proper warm-up and conditioning programs to reduce injury risks.
• Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches, assign duties, and conduct staff meetings as needed.
• Properly supervise all student-athletes during practices, transit, and games while utilizing athletic facilities.
• Inspect all equipment, oversee issuance and collection of uniforms, maintain inventory, enforce equipment care rules, and advise the Athletic Director on reconditioning needs.
• Monitor academic progress of team members, emphasizing the Extra Assistance Program.
• Draft and submit budget requests by the first week of October.
• Submit end-of-season information, including award lists, reports, and schedules.
• Assist students in college placement.
• Support youth programs by offering clinics and other assistance to ensure program continuity.
• Oversee technical development and supervision of all levels in the assigned sport.
• Perform additional tasks and duties as requested.

Requirements

• Adhere to all policies, rules, and regulations of Newington Public Schools, the Central Connecticut Conference (CCC), and the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC).
• Promote the program positively throughout the community.
• Organize work and responsibilities of the coaching staff effectively while exercising independent judgment based on Athletic Department goals.
• Apply budgeting and fiscal planning techniques.
• Manage elevated stress levels in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks.
• Attend out-of-season and in-season meetings and professional development opportunities.
• Establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
• Communicate effectively orally, in writing, and via telephone.
• Respond to emergencies in an effective and timely manner.
• Use a personal computer for job tasks and timely correspondence.

Qualifications

• Valid Connecticut Teacher Certification, Five-Year Renewable Coaching Permit, or meet requirements for a Temporary Emergency Coaching Permit (TECP).
• Valid American Red Cross CPR and Standard First Aid Certificates.
• Valid certificate from an approved Concussion Education course by the Connecticut Department of Education.
• Substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and a commitment to examining new theories and procedures.
• Connecticut State Department of Education Certification: Interscholastic/Intramural Coach (600).
