About the role

Gaston Social Services is dedicated to protecting, caring for, and empowering children and adults who are temporarily or permanently unable to care for themselves by administering federal, state, and county programs focused on improving the well-being of citizens. The Division of Social Services strives to be professionally responsive to citizens’ needs through daily caring outreach and advocacy, while assisting welfare recipients in attaining self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and manages daily activities of 3–5 SWII and SWIII staff by making case assignments, setting objectives, reviewing cases, and holding regular conferences to monitor progress.
  • Coordinates immediate response to allegations involving disabled adults at risk of death or irreparable harm; collaborates with mental health, emergency medical services, law enforcement, and uses court actions to secure emergency custody.
  • Provides direction and counsel for problem situations by jointly processing case information, offering supervisory support, and consulting with Division Coordinator/Administrator and legal department as needed.
  • Reviews social workers’ assessments and authorizes final Adult Protective Services case decisions with timely feedback.
  • Manages unit personnel by conducting interviews, making hiring recommendations, providing ongoing training, conducting performance evaluations, and making promotion and disciplinary recommendations.
  • Manages and coordinates case management programs to ensure service plan goals and continued eligibility through quarterly and annual reviews.
  • Reports necessary information by maintaining client databases and compiling statistical information to analyze program results.
  • Rotates after-hours coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays to ensure APS services are available and provided outside business hours, working with after-hours social workers and administrative staff as appropriate.
  • Directs cases to coordinate APS mobilization, service provision, and guardianship services efficiently and timely to prevent ongoing maltreatment; initiates necessary legal processes such as guardianship or protective orders.
  • Provides training and support to staff throughout legal processes.
  • Assists with emergency shelter operations and undertakes additional responsibilities as required to support departmental needs.

Requirements

  • MSW from an accredited school of social work, OR
  • BSW from an accredited school of social work and completion of the Child Welfare Collaborative (Child Welfare positions only), OR
  • BSW from an accredited school of social work and one year of directly related experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in counseling from an accredited college/university in a human services field and one year of directly related experience, OR
  • Four-year degree in a human services field from an accredited college/university and two years of directly related experience, OR
  • Four-year degree from an accredited college/university and three years of directly related experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.

Qualifications

  • Computer skills; assessment, communication, and crisis intervention skills.
  • General knowledge of mental health issues, geriatric issues, and disability issues.
  • Knowledge of social work principles, methods, and practices.
  • Knowledge of casework supervision and staff training.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health, substance use, disabilities, and community resources.
  • Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing social work programs.
  • Ability to supervise, train, evaluate professional social workers, organize work, monitor quality, and manage caseload distribution.
  • Strong communication, assessment, and problem-solving skills.
  • A copy of a transcript must be included with the application; failure to attach transcripts will result in application rejection.

Additional Information

The applicant selected must undergo a criminal background check and pass a drug screening test prior to employment. If the position requires working with children, the County will require a criminal history record check conducted by the SBI in accordance with applicable state laws.
