About the Role
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, this position develops students' knowledge and understanding of world cultures and cultural evolution, research skills in social orders, and an understanding of geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors influencing world societies. The role fosters appreciation of diverse cultures, languages, racial, ethnic, and religious groups, and political systems.
Responsibilities
- Teaches social studies, incorporating history, geography, economics, political science, systems of government, education, responsible citizenship, and humanities.
- Develops and administers Social Studies curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Creates lesson plans and instructional materials to translate plans into learning experiences, focusing on historical problems and student engagement.
- Develops students' understanding of diverse racial, ethnic, religious, and political groups, socio-economic status, and the influence of these factors on human rights and freedom.
- Fosters understanding of the continuity and patterns of human behavior, and awareness of local, state, national, and global problems and their interrelationships.
- Demonstrates how the past provides a comparative basis for evaluating current issues and predicting future courses of action.
- Develops students' research skills, interpersonal skills, critical value judgments, and ability to contribute to thoughtful exchanges of ideas through various assignments.
- Promotes critical analysis of media's effect on information flow and public discourse, encouraging students to seek alternative sources of information.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual needs, including those of students with special needs.
- Acquires professional knowledge through seminars, workshops, or research to stay current in the educational field.
- Maintains accurate and complete records of student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district procedures and laws.
- Encourages parental involvement and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinates with other professional staff members and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment, maintaining inventory records.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.
Requirements
- Connecticut State Certification as a Social Studies Teacher (026).
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching assignment.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.
Skills & Qualifications
- Dynamic, creative, and broad range of content knowledge with emphasis on literacy instruction.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of world history, including history, geography, sociology, economics, political science, systems of government, education, responsible citizenship, anthropology, and humanities.
- Understanding of humanity’s major problems and historical approaches to their solutions.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications as needed.
- Strong organizational and coordination skills.
- Effective communication with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
