Social Science/Humanities Research Associate III - Texas Center For Disability Studies

This is a grant-funded position; reassignment will be based on performance, progress toward research goals, and continuation of funding. Must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship. Some travel within the state of Texas is required.

About the Role

This position will review, abstract, and code clinical and/or educational records for autism and/or developmental disability (DD) surveillance after extensive training. Responsibilities include participating in data quality checks, project meetings, and education/outreach efforts as needed.

Responsibilities

• Review, abstract, code, and enter clinical and educational data into project databases.
• Travel to school districts and health care facilities in Bexar County as needed to access records.
• Participate in ongoing data quality assurance, including self- and peer review of records, inter-rater reliability checks, and periodic training and recalibration to maintain coding accuracy.
• Attend and participate in project-specific and related meetings.
• Assist with education and outreach efforts.
• Additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in public health, psychology, education, health information management, or other related field with at least 4 years of related experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and ability to learn new database systems, including REDCap.
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality when handling protected health information (PHI) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)-protected records.
• Strong reading comprehension and ability to interpret clinical and educational records.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in data entry and coding.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a high volume of records.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while meeting project deadlines.
• Ability to provide and receive constructive feedback in a collaborative, peer-review environment.
• Values the contributions of others in the work environment.
• Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
• This job requires a Class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's Degree in public health, psychology, education, health information management, or other related field with at least 2 years of related experience.
• Experience with REDCap or similar web-based data management platforms.
• Familiarity with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, or related clinical/behavioral terminology.
• Prior experience with public health surveillance systems or epidemiological data collection.
• Knowledge of DSM-5 criteria or special education classification systems (e.g., Individualized Education Program (IEP)/504 documentation).
• Experience working in a health care, school, or research setting requiring HIPAA/FERPA compliance training.

Pay

$45,000 - $50,000, depending on qualifications.

Schedule

• Full-time (40 hours per week).
• Monday through Friday, flexible between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
• Expected to continue until September 30, 2027.

Working Conditions

• May work around standard office conditions.
• Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation.
• Some travel within the state of Texas required.
