About the Role

The operator leads the slitter crew, supervising processing, conducting in-process inspections, and ensuring operational requirements align with plant management directives.

Responsibilities

• Operates steel slitting line efficiently and follows operational protocols.
• Adheres to production schedules by executing machine orders accurately.
• Directs and supervises support personnel to ensure smooth workflow.
• Provides steel samples as required for quality control purposes.
• Executes all assigned administrative tasks.
• Trains and mentors slitter helpers/slitter setup personnel to transition into operator roles.
• Upholds strict adherence to safety regulations outlined in the Plant Employees Manual.
• Demonstrates punctuality and adherence to attendance policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school education or GED required.
• Ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
• Must meet physical requirements of the job, including lifting 50 pounds and standing for entire shifts on concrete floors.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work well in a team environment.

Equipment and Tools

The operator will use specialized machinery and tools, including:

• Slitters, band breakers, pneumatic banders/crimpers, hand banders, hand cutters, staple guns, electric shears, and nibblers.
• Jib cranes for material handling.
• Precision instruments like micrometers and calipers.
• Pneumatic impact wrenches, tape measures, and calculators.
• Specialized tools like ID/OD calculator wheels and Rockwell machines.

Working Conditions

• Work environment is a steel manufacturing facility with exposure to moving machinery, heavy equipment, and sharp objects.
• Fluctuating seasonal temperatures, including hot and cold conditions.
• Loud noise from machinery and equipment operation.
• Presence of dust, debris, and airborne particles typical of an industrial setting.
• Strict adherence to safety protocols required.

Supervision and Attendance

Supervision and co-worker assistance are readily available. Attendance is closely monitored, as unscheduled absences may jeopardize meeting customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

Consequences of Non-Performance

• Failure to follow safety rules may result in loss of position or termination.
• Failure to meet attendance policy requirements will result in termination.
• Failure to observe safety procedures in material handling may result in serious injury or fatality, and damage to material or property.
• Failure to process charts in priority order may cause production or customer delivery delays, potentially leading to loss of business.
• Failure to follow proper operating procedures may result in excess scrap, production delays, or customer delivery delays, impacting profitability.
• Failure to complete appropriate paperwork may result in inventory shortages or improper billing.
