Skilled Trades Supervisor (Transportation/Maintenance)

About the Role

The Skilled Trades Supervisor in the Bus Maintenance Section assigns and coordinates the work of bus maintenance staff performing a variety of journey-level diesel and related transit vehicle maintenance and repair work. This role oversees the construction, renovation, and maintenance of a skilled trades crew under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Responsibilities

• Prioritizes staff assignments, plans, and implements work projects and methods.
• Determines application procedures and oversees purchasing of materials, submits requisition forms, and specifies supplies and materials.
• Determines new equipment purchases and necessary equipment for projects; performs and oversees equipment maintenance.
• Identifies safety hazards and implements corrections; inspects buildings and grounds for needed repairs and maintenance.
• Plans, assigns, and supervises trades staff, equipment operators, and maintenance personnel in various trades (e.g., carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, painting, lawn maintenance, vehicle/equipment repair).
• Inspects jobs in progress and completed assignments.
• Oversees requisition of parts and supplies, manages heavy equipment fleet, and troubleshoots related equipment.
• Consults and assists other agencies within Broward County.
• Assumes duties of superior when needed.
• Handles personnel issues (attendance, hiring, progressive discipline), payroll functions, reports, filing, and budget monitoring.
• Inputs data and work logs into computer systems; communicates maintenance issues to peers and management; attends relevant meetings.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

• Four (4) years of journey-level experience in diesel or heavy equipment maintenance and repair, including one (1) year of lead work/supervisory experience.
• Ability to work shift work in a 24/7 operation (days, afternoons, nights, weekends, and holidays).
• Ability to report to multiple work locations as needed.
• Must obtain a Florida Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Air Brake and Passenger Transport Endorsement within ninety (90) days of employment.

Preferences

• OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.178 (Forklift Compliance).
• 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F (608) Federal License for Handling Refrigerants.
• Two or more ASE Certifications (e.g., A1, A2, A3, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8).
• EPA Section 609 Certification - Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC).
• Broward County Transportation Leadership Program (TLP) Graduate.
• One or more years of Maintenance Management Software experience (Asset Works or comparable).
• One or more years of experience in Transit Bus - Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
• One or more years of experience in Electrical/Electronic Systems or Transit Bus - Diesel Engines.
• One or more years of Time & Attendance Software experience (Kronos or comparable).
• One or more years of experience in a union environment/union negotiation.
• Automotive Technology Certification.
• Associate Degree or higher in a field related to the area of assignment.

Work Environment

• Physical Demands: Performs light work involving walking/standing most of the time; exerts up to 25+ pounds of force regularly; requires skill in using fingers, hands, or limbs for tools/machines.
