Skateguard

Non-seasonal and/or seasonal, part-time position with no benefits. Schedule includes weekdays, evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

About the Role

Responsible for patrolling the ice arena during all skating sessions. Enforce safety rules and handle any accidents that may occur. Maintain and distribute skate rental equipment. Communicate positively and professionally with the public.

This position requires good human relations skills and tact. The ability to skate well, prevent problems and safety hazards, and properly apply first aid are necessary for successful execution.

Responsibilities

• Assume responsibility for ensuring the effective performance of Skate Guard functions.
• Monitor arena ice during all public sessions in accordance with established standards (one guard per 75 skaters with a maximum of three guards on the ice at any one time).
• Monitor arena ice during patch, freestyle, and privately rented sessions as required. Collect for add-on ice usage.
• Supervise puck practices.
• Rotate ice duties with skate counter duties every 20 minutes.
• Enforce established safety rules and policies. Warn patrons when behaving inappropriately and explain rules. Keep skaters off the rink during ice making times.
• Distribute and receive rental skates and equipment.
• Maintain skate rental equipment: disinfect helmets and skates, repair laces, and organize skate racks. Return all equipment to proper location before leaving.
• Monitor entrance into arena. Check for wristbands.
• Handle accidents appropriately: apply necessary first aid and complete injury records.
• Assist operations in ice maintenance.
• Assist in Learn to Skate lessons and monitor Puck Practice.
• Establish and maintain positive relations with patrons: respond to questions and concerns promptly, assist and support patrons positively, handle safety violators tactfully, determine appropriate penalties, and provide an example of safe skating.
• Establish and maintain effective working relations with area personnel and management: follow direction of Skate Guard Supervisor, Shift Manager, and Director; assist other Skate Guards as necessary; inform management of area activities and significant problems; attend all staff meetings and training sessions; assist area staff as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned: keep work area clean and well maintained, vacuum floors before the end of each shift, clean restrooms, hockey boxes, counters, skate rental lobby, and carpeted area by the rink; lock and secure skate room; secure the gates surrounding the arena before open skating; empty lockers of skates and equipment and place appropriate items in Lost and Found in main office.
• Stay current in CPR and First Aid certification.

Requirements

• Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid certification as of hire date.
• Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification as of hire date.
• Approved Criminal Background Investigation check if over 18 years of age.
• Must be at least 16 years old.
• Strong ice skating abilities.
• Tact and good public relations skills.
• Knowledge of Center safety rules and standards.

• Balancing: May involve walking, standing, crouching on narrow, slippery or moving surfaces.
• Stooping: Bending downward and forward at the waist. Requires full use of lower extremities and back muscles.
• Kneeling: Resting on knee or knees.
• Crouching: Bending downward and forward at the leg and spine.
• Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
• Standing: For extended time periods.
• Walking: Especially for long distances.
• Lifting: Occurs frequently and requires substantial use of upper body and back muscles (up to 60 lbs. occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. frequently).
• Grasping: Using fingers and palm on an object.
• Feeling: Perceiving sensual characteristics of objects including size, shape, texture, temperature, etc., through touch.
• Talking: Especially when conveying detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, loudly, or quickly.
• Hearing: Able to hear average or normal conversations and receive ordinary information.
• Seeing: Average, ordinary, vision acuity necessary to prepare or inspect documents or products, or operate machinery.

Working Conditions

• Worker subject to changing inside temperatures, such as freezers.
• Must work in a very noisy environment requiring workers to shout to communicate.

Mental Activities and Requirements

• General Education-Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions and to deal with ordinary, standardized situations.
• General Education-Mathematics Ability: No math skills are required for the position.
• General Education-Language Ability: No reading required for the position.
