Site Engineer I
About the role
The Site Engineer I is a contributing member of the site-level Data Center Operations team, reporting directly to the Manager of Engineering Operations. This role involves working with mission-critical infrastructure, including Generators, UPS Systems, HVAC Systems, Fire/Life Safety Systems, BMS Systems, and CMMS systems. Candidates should have expertise in either electrical or mechanical work and be competent in the non-expertise area.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to daily site operations, including creating and modifying site operating procedures.
- Assist in the creation of change management tickets and timely incident reporting.
- Perform site maintenance, repairs, and inspections to ensure high availability of Digital Realty’s data center operations.
- Gain a complete understanding of facility layout, MEP systems, equipment nomenclature, and site-specific system one-lines.
- Understand and work with equipment sequence of operations (SOOs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), and emergency operating procedures (EOPs).
- Familiarize yourself with customer SLAs, engineering-specific lease obligations, and facility top 20 EOPs.
- Manage BMS alarm functionality, alarm escalation/acknowledgment, and data/trend extraction.
- Follow Digital Realty’s event management, escalation, and incident reporting procedures.
- Use the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to create, edit, implement, and close change management work orders.
- Create, edit, resolve, and close incident reports following site incidents.
- Understand and adhere to Digital Realty’s Maintenance and Operations Standards and Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety standards.
- Maintain and repair all mission-critical equipment and systems to achieve 100% uptime and compliance with customer SLAs.
- Supervise construction activity and installations as required.
- Execute site-specific change management processes, including creating Method of Procedures (MOPs) for low-risk preventative maintenance and repairs.
- Troubleshoot site mechanical and electrical systems effectively.
- Respond to unplanned events without immediate supervision.
- Conduct efficient rounds/inspections and detect anomalies.
- Develop or improve SOPs for site-specific equipment.
- Understand the local customers' business and data center operations.
- Support accreditation initiatives such as SSAE16, SOC2, ISO 27001, etc.
- Complete Digital Realty’s Critical Awareness Training.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of experience in mission-critical facilities operating/engineering or equivalent equipment experience (UPS, HVAC, generators, fire/life safety systems).
- Hands-on electrical or mechanical skill and competence in the non-expertise area.
- Strong knowledge of various UPS Systems and architectures.
- Strong knowledge of various cooling systems and architectures.
- Strong understanding of infrastructure redundancy configurations and equipment risks (N+1, 2N, ATS/STS, Failover Scenarios).
- Strong knowledge of energy efficiency principles.
- Strong interpersonal, presentation, and communication skills.
- Ability to respond effectively, verbally and in writing, to sensitive issues, complex inquiries, or complaints.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with Microsoft Project, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, or AutoCAD.
- Basic understanding of emergency situations and escalation processes.
- Strong understanding of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM), and power metering systems.
Physical Requirements
- Lift and handle up to 50 pounds.
- Bend, stoop, and stretch as required for placement and retrieval of network devices, materials, or equipment.
- Work under a raised data center floor.
- Climb ladders (up to 16 feet) to reach plenum spaces.
