We believe building engineering is more than systems and structures—it’s about powering progress and enabling innovation. As part of HDR’s Building Engineering Services Group, you’ll help design critical infrastructure that supports the digital age and shapes spaces where people work, connect, and thrive. From high-performance data centers driving the future of AI to dynamic commercial environments, your work will directly support technological advancement, sustainability, and human experience. Our team brings together mechanical, electrical, structural, and civil engineering experts to solve complex design challenges with precision, creativity, and collaboration.

About the role

HDR is seeking a Digital Design Specialist for our Building Engineering Services Business Group in Indianapolis, Indiana. This role is part of an integrated facility and infrastructure design team specializing in Mechanical, Electrical, Structural, and Site Civil Engineering. Initially, you will contribute to the design of facility-related sites for the Data Center market, with future opportunities to explore Corporate/Commercial, Healthcare, Education, Municipal, Civic, Industrial, and Sports & Recreation projects.

You will coordinate closely with the IL/IN civil design team, providing BIM and AutoCAD/Civil 3D support throughout the project lifecycle—from planning and construction documents to construction administration. Coursework or experience in land development and site civil design (grading, utilities, storm drainage, stormwater management, and erosion control) is required. This role also involves mentoring early-career staff to develop their drafting and design capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Work under the supervision of an Engineer or technical professional within the Site Civil discipline.
  • Create and manage Site Civil models, generating BIM elements based on the Level of Development (LOD) outlined in the Digital Delivery Plan (DDP) and project scope.
  • Follow direction from engineers or technical professionals while demonstrating technical competence in discipline-specific software.
  • Accurately model BIM elements within spatial constraints using current 3D software.
  • Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, and diagrams within project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Maintain discipline models, including project information, coordinates, scales, orientations, scope boundaries, match-lines, views, and sheets.
  • Produce discipline-specific documentation with accurate annotations.
  • Monitor, improve, and maintain company and client standards and model health.
  • Coordinate design with other discipline models through Design Reviews and the 3D Coordination process.
  • Assist with or execute additional Digital Delivery requirements as identified on the project.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Building Engineering Services Business Group.

Requirements

  • Technical proficiency with 3D design software and document management infrastructure.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office products and communication tools.
  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and strong organizational traits.
  • Basic understanding of engineering or architectural concepts.
