Sioux Lookout Background

Sioux Lookout has a population of approximately 5500 people and serves as the main hub for 31 remote First Nation Communities north of Sioux Lookout. These communities have populations ranging from 200 to 2500, with an overall catchment area of 32,000. Sioux Lookout is known as the "Hub of the North" and is the primary provider of multiple services, including healthcare.

The city is located 70 km north of the Trans-Canada Highway, between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg, with a busy local airport serving the First Nation communities, Thunder Bay, and Winnipeg daily. Recently, Sioux Lookout opened a fully accredited 60-bed hospital called the Meno-Ya Win Health Centre, equipped with two OR suites, OT, PT, dieticians, diagnostic imaging, and mental health services. The hospital also employs two general surgeons, a full-time radiologist, and receives specialist support from Thunder Bay and Winnipeg. A 100-bed hostel is attached to the hospital, providing easy access to services for visiting First Nation patients. Doctors consult with experienced nurses in each community's medical center via phone from the hospital and travel to communities to hold regular clinics.

Practice Opportunities

Sioux Lookout and Area Practice Opportunities are provided by Sioux Lookout Regional Physicians Services Inc. (SLRPSI), founded in 2010 to offer innovative, patient-focused physician services in the Sioux Lookout area. SLRPSI is a corporation that plans, governs, and manages these services through three groups:

  • The Northern Practice Group, responsible for 31 First Nation communities and staffing the hospital, including ER, Hospitalist, community phone coverage, community clinics, and managing the Northern appointment clinic.
  • The Hugh Allen Group, responsible for staffing the hospital including ER, Hospitalist, Pickle Lake phone coverage, and managing the Hugh Allen clinic which services the Town of Sioux Lookout.
  • AMDOCS, responsible for working in Big Trout Lake, Pikangikum, and Muskrat Dam.

To ensure patients receive the continuity of care they need, SLRPSI is seeking physicians who are comfortable working in ER, as a Hospitalist, and holding clinics. They are open to full-time or part-time commitments and accept locums to supplement contracted physicians. To apply for a locum opportunity, candidates must submit an updated CV and a cover letter explaining why they would be a good long-term fit for Sioux Lookout and Area. Once approved, the Medical Director reviews the application and begins the privileging process. During the first locum assignment, physicians are expected to commit at least three weeks and are compensated on a per diem basis.
